From July 23rd to 29th, young athletes from around the province had an opportunity to sharpen their skills and train with the best, as members of the Canadian Alpine Ski Team were on hand to coach, demonstrate and even spend a little one-on-one time with the kids.
Representatives from Fischer, Elan, Head, Atomic, Rossignol and Solomon were on the hill as well, allowing athletes to try out the latest ski equipment as they work with their coaches to plan for the coming season.
Although daytime temperatures on the glacier soared to a scorching 35 degrees, bags of salt allowed coaches to keep the snow nice and firm until at least noon each day. Afternoons were spent taking part in various dryland activities, swimming in the lake and catching up on a bit of rest.
After three days on snow, the athletes were given a day off before returning to the slopes for another three days of skiing. During the day off, the Telus Whistler Sports Centre and PacificSport hosted a sport education session at the Whistler Secondary School, where athletes, parents and coaches learned from experts in such fields as “Mental Skills Preparation”, “Nutrition and Fuel for Success” and “Injury Smart Training”.
The weather in Whistler was picture-perfect from beginning to end and everyone agrees that it was an awesome summer training experience!
