The CIBC Wood Gundy K2 race at Grouse Mountain January 17th and 18th was a great success, thanks largely to a small army of over 100 determined volunteers who worked tirelessly under some tricky conditions.
Saturday presented a number of challenges, with dry air and warm temperatures resulting in sugary snow that would not support the weight of the skiers. Much time and effort went into conditioning the course and the race went off without a hitch. Due to a late start, the race results were tallied from a single run only.
On Sunday, the snow conditions were much improved, but low overcast skies presented some visibility issues. When the fog lifted, the race resumed and results were obtained from two runs for each racer. The fact that the rain came down all day long didn't seem to trouble anyone. The athletes had a great time and re-connected with friends from other zone clubs.
Participating in the event were over 100 athletes from Mt Washington, Hemlock, Whistler, Cypress, Seymour and of course Grouse Mountain. Several of the families visiting from other mountains were there to help with the race and this certainly contributed to its success.
Of course the weekend would not have been possible without the support of CIBC Wood Gundy. Frank Mauro, a Vice President from CIBC Wood Gundy, was on hand to present the awards both Saturday and Sunday.
