Super G Gold for Elliot, Wadey, Aberger, Finn, Paton & Zaitsoff at Red Mtn - BC Alpine Ski Association

Red Mountain Resort received 15 cm of new snow overnight and did a late grooming just before the race. This introduced a bit of delay in course setting and inspection. A local area power outage between races knocked out the resort’s internet service provider, so the live timing link was lost about 20 minutes before the 2nd race started and did not come up again in the afternoon. Despite all that, the course held up quite well and we were all happy that both the men and women managed to get two races in today.

– The results were anything but ordinary, as well!

Race 1

– Highlighted by ties for the bronze medals in both the women’s and men’s events – and in both cases, the co-medalists were Red Mountain Racers. In the K2 men’s class, Steven Fry and Brett Pozzo tied for 3rd while Rebekah teBulte and Tessa Stone tied for bronze in the women’s K2 class. Alex Wadey of Revelstoke and Jeremy Finn of Big White took the gold and silver, respectively, in the first men’s race. Girls from Big White locked up the top two podium spots in the women’s first race, with Sarah Elliot taking gold and Jen Meyer silver.

– In the overall, Red Mountain skiers filled the men’s podium, with local sensation Sasha Zaitsoff taking gold, Ross Nevison of Prince George Ski Club (and Red Mountain Racers Ski Academy) taking silver and Richard Watson of Georgian Peaks (another RMR Academy student/athlete) capturing the silver medal. Sarah Elliot also took the gold in overall for the women, with Jacey Paton of Salmo Ski Team and Sydney Gilman of Whitewater in second and third, respectively.

Race 2

Jeremy Finn was back on the K2 men’s podium, this time on the top step. Jordan Black of Fernie Alpine Ski Team took the second spot and Dylan Zaitsoff grabbed the bronze, showing no sign of wear and tear from a hooked gate and spectacular crash in the first race. Daniella Aberger of Apex shot to the top of the women’s K2 podium after just missing with a fourth place finish in the first race. Tessa Stone of Red Mountain Racers climbed to the 2nd place position and Erika Park of Apex grabbed third.
– In the overall, Ross Nevison really gave perennial local favourite Sasha Zaitsoff a good run for his money, edging him out by 12/100ths at the intermediate timing point, but falling short by 0.5 seconds by the finish. So, the overall men’s podium for race 2 was an exact replica of that for race 1 – Zaitsoff, Nevison, Watson.

The racers and organizers/volunteers were all thrilled to have 3 members of the Canadian Disabled Alpine Ski Team Development Group participating in today’s races! Josh Dueck, Luke Donovan and Carley Grigg really showed everyone some strong skiing/riding!

The Red Mountain Racers ROC is hoping for a smooth day Sunday, with clearing forecast for overnight, and only a chance of a few flurries on Sunday afternoon. They also hope to have the live timing link from their race office "rebooted" following the local area power outage that occurred between races today.

A big thank you to Steve Hilts, Red Mountain Racers Chief of Timing, for taking the time to send us this report after a long day on the hill!
