Of four scheduled race days, only two were ultimately successful, but boy, were they successful!
Sunday was day-one of the event and despite valiant efforts by volunteers and organizers, all racing was cancelled due to poor weather.
Things improved on Monday for the ladies’ "Super Combined" competition, which is a two-run event combining the times from one super G run and one slalom run. In this event, the best all-around skiers with speed AND technical prowess prevail.
Our BC Ski Team put two ladies in the top-10; Elli Terwiel (Sun Peaks Alpine Club) and Georgia Simmerling (Grouse Tyee Ski Club) both added inspired slalom runs to already excellent super G runs to finish 7th and 10th respectively.

Tuesday got off to a promising start, but the men’s race would be called part way through the first run and rescheduled for the following day.
On Wednesday, the Race Organizing Committee undertook to run three races…a men’s super G and a two-run (slalom and super G) men’s super combined. Amazingly they carried out their plan and by mid-afternoon everyone was in full tear-down mode celebrating a great day for BC athletes and the end of another superb speed series at Apex Mountain Resort.
Both Arnie Erickson (Race Chair) and Bruce Holliday (Chief of Race) expressed that "to pull off 2 super G’s and a slalom in one day at a Nor Am is an unbelievable accomplishment and incredibly rewarding"! They went on to say that "the entire crew and all the athletes should be congratulated on a job well done". Truly amazing…thanks everyone!!
BC Ski Team athlete Ben Thomsen (Windermere Valley Ski Club) took full advantage of the opportunity to run two super G’s in one day. Thomsen’s first race was good, but not good enough for him. "My first super G run was OK, but I made 2 big mistakes going onto the flat section of the course," he reported. "I was much more aggressive in the second race and made up time on the flats. I still made a little mistake, but I skied the rest of the course really well and I’m happy with how it worked out."
Thomson finished 9th in the super G in one minute, 16.17 seconds…a mere 1.24 seconds off the winning time of 1:14.93 set by Travis Ganong of the USA. He earned the distinction of being the second fastest Canadian junior in the race.
Just out of the top-15 was BC Team’s Conrad Pridy (Whistler Mountain Ski Club) finishing 17th with a time of 1:16.61. Thomsen and Pridy also delivered in the Super Combined, taking 13th and 14th positions respectively.
Men’s coach Andrew Lambert told us "the coaching staff is delighted with the performances of all the guys on the team today – this is a great way to wrap up the races here at Apex and head to Big Mountain with a ton of energy and confidence."
