Five solid days of sunshine graced the hills of Apex Mountain Resort to the delight of athletes, coaches, volunteers and race organizers. To quote Arnie Erickson, Race Chair for the event: “What can I say? We’ve had outstanding racing here this week and the conditions were perfect again today.” A record number of athletes – 170 in all – tackled the slick Gunbarrell super G track Friday. According to Erickson, the ratio of 85 boys to 85 girls is remarkable. “It was not that long ago that we were lucky to have 20 or 30 girls in the race. This is a good trend!”
Morgan Pridy (BC Ski Team/Whistler Mountain Ski Club) blew away any suggestion that Thursday’s win was a stroke of luck. Friday’s race was his by more than a second! Pridy completed his run in one minute, 15.73 seconds, followed by American Anton Hilts who took second place with a time of 1:16.80. Third spot belonged to Andy Trow of Alberta who came down in 1:16.97.
“I am pretty amped-up right now,” Pridy revealed. “The course was almost the same as yesterday’s, so it felt like a “second run” and gave me a chance to fix up a few mistakes I made yesterday. I knew that anyone on my team could win today and I saw that some of them didn’t finish so I thought my chances were good for another medal.” The men’s team will take a short break then head to Whistler for the Canadian Championships early in February. As a result of his success this week, Pridy is looking forward to “better start numbers at nationals which should improve my chances in the softer Whistler conditions.”
