Grouse Tyee Ski Club hosts Rio Tinto Alcan Nancy Greene Ski League Festival | BC Alpine Ski Association

GROUSE TO HOST SKI FESTIVAL FOR YOUNG SKI RACERS
Grouse Mountain’s Tyee Ski Club will host the Rio Tinto Alcan Nancy Greene Ski League Festival on Sunday January 25, giving more than 250 young athletes—five to ten years of age—a chance to benchmark themselves with athletes from Whistler, Cypress, Grouse, Seymour, Mount Washington, Hemlock and Manning Park.

True to the spirit and philosophy behind the Nancy Greene Ski League, this festival aims to encourage participation, interaction, and the development of technical skills in a fun and motivating atmosphere without the pressures of intense competition.

The young athletes will compete in four events: a dual slalom, an individual jump, a speed trap, and moguls. Bob Walton, one of the festival organizers explains, “The dual slalom is a team event for the six, seven, and eight year-olds. The other events are all individual events. For the jump, we set up a jump on Centennial, and we measure how far the kids can fly through the air. For the speed trap, we get the kids to go into a tuck, and we measure their speed with a radar gun. Lastly, there’s a mogul event, where the kids ski down a mogul run. This is a time event also.“

Some very promising young athletes, such as Andrew Lee and Eva Mercier from the Grouse Tyee ski club—both winners of the first Nancy Greene Ski League event in Whistler earlier this month—will participate in this fun event.

Events will start at 9:30 a.m. Team and individual awards will be given to the nine, ten, and eleven year old racers at 3:30 p.m.
