Toria Whitney Races to Third Spot on Nor Am Giant Slalom Podium, Nakiska | BC Alpine Ski Association

BC Ski Team's Toria Whitney (WMSC) finishes 3rd in Nor Am Giant Slalom at Nakiska, January 31/09 - she was also the fastest Junior! MIELKE Kristen (1st); ROSS Laurenne (2nd); WHITNEY Victoria (3rd); RYLEY Kate(4th); SIMMERLING Georgia (5th);NAKISKA, AB (January 31, 2009) – Victoria Whitney (WMSC), who won a Nor-Am Cup race earlier this season, was the top Canadian in today’s giant slalom in Nakiska, AB.

Whitney, a member of the BC Ski Team, finished third in a two-run combined time of two minutes 29.87 seconds.

“I made a big mistake on the top section of the second run, however, I was able to keep it together and hold onto my position. Overall it was a good day,” said Whitney.

American Kristen Mielke won the race, crossing the finish line in 2:27.26 followed by teammate Laurenne Ross 0.7s behind. Canadian development team member Kate Ryley was fourth.

The Nor-Am Cup event at Nakiska continues tomorrow with another ladies giant slalom race.

The best skiers at the event from Canada and the United States will also face off in a unique head-to-head Pontiac GMC Nations Cup at 3 p.m.

The dual slalom will see eight Canadian skiers take on eight American skiers, each selected from the national teams participating in the upcoming Northwest Funds Coupe Nor-Am Cup races.

Each pairing will do two slalom runs and the skier with the best overall time will score points for their nation. The nation with the most points at the end of the event is declared the winner with $5000 in prize money available.
