The K2 Provincial Championships successfully wrapped up at Red Mountain Resort in Rossland on Sunday after four days of intensive competition. The event took place March 11-15 and was open to all 13 and 14 year olds from across British Columbia. Nearly 100 boys and 100 girls raced their hardest for top spots in Thursday’s Super G, Friday’s Super Combined (one run of Super G plus one run of Slalom) and weekend events of Slalom and Giant Slalom.
After an open training day of Super G on Wednesday, the field got down to the business of SG racing on Thursday morning under bright blue skies and firm, fast snow conditions. Friday’s super combined competition started out nearly the same with more cooperation from Mother Nature.
On Saturday, the weather took a turn for the worse, with heavy snow starting mid morning. The host club, Red Mountain Racers, a small army of volunteers and the resort of Red Mountain did a phenomenal job preparing the slope for two different race courses. The women raced giant slalom that day while the men took to the slalom course.
On Sunday’s final day of competition, the snow continued forcing race organizers to shorten the men’s Giant Slalom to just one run. The ladies plowed through heavy snow on the slalom hill.
These provincial championships were also used as a selection race to determine who would represent British Columbia at the K2 National Championships to be held at Silver Star Mountain Resort near Vernon, BC – March 28th to April 3rd.
