"This morning the races start! As the BC women’s team looks forward to promises of fast tracks and podiums (fingers crossed!), we are looking back at a pre-season full of awesome opportunities and hard work to gain confidence.
"Most recently we set up camp in our second home – Panorama – for some first class training on the very same slopes that we will be racing on later this month. Beside some of the world’s greatest skiers, the Italians women’s speed team, we prepared for the upcoming downhill and super-G races. After training in the mornings, the afternoons were spent putting as much wax as we could into our speed skis and, to our coach Sam’s dismay, singing ‘jingle bells’!
"Last week we travelled to Lake Louise to forerun the Women’s World Cup downhill races. For many of our athletes this was their first time on the downhill track. Beautiful weather and cold temperatures met us for our first run down the track, where we learned just how important it is to nail the important sections of the course, and as Gregor (head coach) always says, to tuck!
Using the same video feed as the World Cup girls, we were able to see exactly where and how to make up time and go faster! Needless to say we all got the jitters out of our system before the upcoming Nor-Ams, and are now accustomed to the course and the speed. One thing we can’t seem to get used to however, is the cold!
"So as the last of the wax is scraped, bibs donned and video analyzed, the BC women’s team is awaiting the countdown of the timing clock with speed hungry attitudes, knowing that ‘clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose!’."
