TECK RACE RECAP: Red Mountain, Kootenay Zone

On January 22 & 23, for the first time in 2 years, Red Mountain Racers were delighted to welcome teams from the Kootenay Zone to the TECK U14, U16 Zone Race! Alpine Clubs were represented by Fernie, Golden Kicking Horse, Black Dogs, Kimberly, Windermere Valley, Whitewater, and of course Red Mountain.

The race took place on the Legacy Training slope on RED Mountain, and the slope held up well for race day. Athletes raced two full days, with a 2-run combined time GS Saturday and a 2-run combined time slalom on Sunday. Both days were a challenge with fog holds, but the athletes rallied and attacked the course fearlessly.

Thank you to our volunteers, both from Red Mountain and visiting hills! It was wonderful to see so many happy faces and to see our friends again.

Congratulations to all athletes, most of whom had not raced in two years – the camaraderie and energy were electric!!!

2022 O2e Brands Whistler Cup Postponed Until 2023

2022 O2e Brands Whistler Cup Postponed Until 2023

January 26, 2022

For Immediate Release

Whistler, BC – Despite our most optimistic and enthusiastic efforts to press forward with our 2022 O2E Brands Whistler Cup, concerns related to the Omicron variant, and its impact on global travel, have forced us to postpone the next Whistler Cup until 2023.

In commenting on the postponement of this year’s Whistler Cup, Jim McGovern, Chair of the Whistler Cup Organizing Committee said “We feel the frustration of U16 and U14 racers both internationally and in Canada. Covid 19 has impacted your opportunities to pursue your passion for alpine ski racing for several years now. We want you to know that we are as committed as ever to bringing back Whistler Cup next year, our 30th Anniversary Year. We promise to again bring you the legendary international youth alpine ski racing experience that Whistler Cup is known for around the world.”

We are grateful to our many sponsors and partners for their continued support of the O2E Brands Whistler Cup and we look forward to seeing you in 2023!

TECK RACE RECAP: Whistler Mtn. Ski Club, Coast Zone

Whistler Mountain Ski Club hosted Teck Coast Zone GS and Slalom, January 22 & 23, 2022

Location: Dave Murray National Training Centre, Whistler Mountain
Hill Conditions: Firm, spring-like conditions both days
Weather Conditions: Mix of sun and cloud
Race Structure: Two-run combined time giant slalom on Saturday; two-run combined time slalom on Sunday

Racers were back in action at Whistler last weekend weekend for the first U14 zone races since 2020! It was a beautiful spring-like weekend under mostly sunny skies, with over 120 racers competing at the National Training Centre on Whistler’s Ptarmigan run. The two-run combined giant slalom races were held on Saturday, and the two-run combined slalom races were held on Sunday.

It was a perfect way to start racing again! Despite the warm temperatures, the race surface held up really well, with lots of terrific work from a great crew of volunteers from across the Coast Zone clubs. Big thank you to Teck for sponsoring this event, and to Vail for helping us make it happen. Congratulations to all racers for their good cheer and for skiing their best!

TECK RACE RECAP: Troll/Lightning Creek, North Zone

Lightning Creek Ski Club hosted Teck U12, U14, U16, U18 Zone Races at Troll Mountain, January 22 & 23, 2022

Everyone agreed it was a great “Welcome Back to Racing” weekend for the North Zone clubs and families. Saturday’s busy schedule included a two-run combined GS race for all competitors, as well as an exciting two-run night Slalom on “The Face”. On Sunday, racers took part in a Paneled Dual Slalom competition. The weather cooperated, the volunteers were amazing and the kids were smiling! We raced GS under the sun and were proud to pull off our first night Slalom under the new lights at Troll Resort.

We also held a rip-roaring Dual Slalom on Sunday, with 10 teams of 6 athletes each – first across the line, photo-finishes all day long. The kids made new friends, reconnected with old friends and left the ski hill feeling exhausted and renewed at the same time. Thank you Teck and BC Alpine for the awesome new race kit – it made everything look really fancy!

Whistler Mountain Ski Club hosts Teck U16 Coast Zone GS/SL, Jan. 15 & 16

Ski racing is back! Zone racing returned to Whistler Mountain after an 18-month hiatus, with over 80 U16 and FIS racers from the Coast Zone racing strong on Whistler Mountain this past weekend. The U16 and FIS racers competed on a near perfect, hard-packed Ptarmigan run, which proved to be a challenging and rewarding re-entry back into racing. The format was a two-run combined time GS on Saturday and a two-run combined time slalom on Sunday.

Everyone was grateful to the Dave Murray National Training Centre on Whistler Mountain, and to Vail Resorts, for producing a high-quality race surface after rainy weather earlier in the week. Racers enjoyed a little sun with fog on Saturday, and overcast conditions on Sunday. Volunteers from all Clubs (Whistler, Grouse, Cypress, Seymour, Sasquatch, and Mt. Washington) helped to make this first race of 2022 an outstanding experience for the racers.
