Best of the Season from BC Alpine – message from new GM, Anders Hestdalen

Dear Athletes, Coaches, Parents, Volunteers and Officials in BC,

I would like to thank the countless volunteers in our 32 clubs for your continuous work and commitment to providing kids the opportunity to reach their full potential and become “skiers for life”! You are doing a fantastic job and this is something I can truly say after my first 3 ½ months as General Manager of BC Alpine. Since the beginning of September, I have met more than 400 people involved in all areas of our sport, and what stands out to me most is the high level of engagement and desire to deliver a great product – Alpine Skiing. Our mission is “to bring communities fun, challenge and opportunities for personal excellence through participation and competition in Alpine Ski Racing”, and after having the pleasure of spending time with many of you, I know this is exactly what we are doing. I honestly appreciate all the discussions, insights, constructive criticism and ideas that have been brought to me. Please continue, my door is always open!

Both society and sport have evolved considerably over the past few decades, and in order to ensure we are offering the best possible programs we must develop ideas that will position BC Alpine for continued and even greater success. Our immediate goal as a sport for youth in BC is to make sure we remain current, relevant and engaging. A new BC Alpine Strategic Plan will be in place soon, clearly outlining our direction for the future.

I’m happy to see and report that we have 1,400 more registered members today than at the same time last year, and this is not simply due to early registration. We are anticipating the 17/18 membership numbers to be at an all-time high for BC Alpine, which is great news and tells me you are doing an excellent job!

Coming from Norway, where we have experienced tremendous success in winter sports over many years, I know there is nothing that has been done there that can’t be achieved here in Canada. I believe it is all related to hard work without shortcuts, and having amazing, dedicated people at all levels of the sport. I see this in BC and I am excited to do my part to help strengthen this great culture and the communities that support it.

I am truly proud to work for BC Alpine. I wish you all the best of luck for the season, a very Merry Christmas, a safe and happy holiday and a wonderful New Year!

We will be out of the office (though often available by email) from December 22nd through January 2nd (back on January 3rd).

Sincerely,

Anders Hestdalen, General Manager

Respect in Sport Program Information – Learn it, Live it and Pass it on!

Further to the presentations and discussions at the annual Member Summit/AGM and coaches meetings, BC Alpine has proceeded with implementation of the Respect Group programs. In taking this action BC Alpine is following the lead of Alpine Canada Alpin who have established a formal relationship with Respect Group Inc. (RGI) to educate and empower ACA staff, coaches and athletes.

All BC Alpine staff and board members are expected to complete the Respect in Sport Activity Leader program to ensure that they are equipped with the fundamental understanding of how to build and maintain a culture of respect in our sport. They are also expected to complete the Respect in Sport Parent program to ensure that they are able to speak competently about each program to our members and stakeholders. Both programs feature on-line delivery accessed through self-registration and completion of a PayPal payment process.

All clubs are advised to adopt the Respect in Sport programs to enlighten and educate their members and coaches on the prevention of bullying, abuse, harassment and discrimination. All BC clubs are listed within the system to enable users to associate themselves with their home club for reporting purposes. Any club or organization wishing to cover the cost of the program for their users may contact RGI directly to obtain a pre-registration code to be used in lieu of the PayPal mode. Club leaders can request Administrator's rights for those who wish to run progress reports.

Clubs may also find it beneficial to encourage their athletes to complete the Activity Leader program, as many of them are actively involved with younger athletes and are viewed as leaders within the community. This education will enable each athlete to speak confidently and competently about topics related to Respect in Sport and to demonstrate through their own behaviour appropriate ways of interacting with others.

Concurrent with the implementation of the Respect in Sport programs, BC Alpine is in the process of updating a number of related policies and will post these on our website once the updates have been reviewed and formally approved.

For more information on the RGI programs please contact:

Calgary, Alta. (November 30, 2017) – Alpine Canada gears up for its second-annual U16 Rising Stars camp, which bolsters Canada’s next generation of alpine superstars.

Panorama Mountain Resort is set to host Canada’s top U16 athletes once again this December. 34 athletes from across the nation will descend on Panorama from the 2nd – 10th undertaking both speed and technical training in preparation for the upcoming season.

Focused on ensuring Canada’s young athletes are prepared for not only the upcoming season but their future success in ski racing, Alpine Canada’s Dusan Grasic AND Jennifer Stielow will lead the camp with seven of Canada’s coaches involved in the ‘Top 10 Coach’ program.

“I am excited once again to see athletes and coaches from across the nation come together for this week in Panorama,” said Dusan Grasic, Alpine Canada Director of Domestic Sport. “It builds relationships, learning opportunities and fosters life-long friendships for those involved. This year we are also integrating a dryland testing component for the athletes, emphasising that it is not only on hill training and skills that are important but re-assuring athletes and coaches the importance of dryland training and testing.”

The Rising Stars camp is a building block for the next generation of athletes providing an unprecedented opportunity for them to grow their skills early season and prepare themselves for the opportunity to compete for their province at the 2018 U16 Sport Chek National Championships or Canada at the 2018 FIS CHI Whistler Cup.

"This is an awesome opportunity for our BC kids to meet, become friends and train with like-minded athletes from across the country in one of the best training centers in Canada," said BC Alpine Vice President, Johnny Crichton. "Lead by ACA’s Domestic Director, Dusan Grasic, and staffed by upcoming coaches from all over Canada, the environment is hard to beat!"

Alpine Canada wishes to thank the partners of the Rising Stars camp including, the Nik Zorcic (NZ) Foundation, Panorama Mountain Resort and World Cup Supply.

Congratulations to all athletes selected to attend the 2017 U16 Rising Stars camp!
