TECK Open Super-G at Apex Mountain Resort, hosted by the Apex Ski Club

"Ski teams from across the province gathered at Apex Mountain Resort to compete in BC Alpine’s TECK Open – super-G and Night Dual Slalom over the weekend. With a mix of sun and clouds in the sky and temperatures dipping to -5, course conditions were favourable for the racers, many of whom are skiing their first season of SG. Following the race, dedicated volunteers set up the night dual slalom course on Okanagan Run for an evening of Dual Slalom under the lights. By Jessica Barrett – The second Youth Olympic Winter Games wrap up today in Lillehammer, Norway. Youth Olympic champion ski cross racer Reece Howden was chosen as Canada’s flag bearer.
The 17-year-old from Cultus Lake, B.C. will lead 53 Canadian athletes into to the Closing Ceremony this evening at Sjogg Tent at Stampesletta.

“Leading the team into the closing ceremony makes my experience here even more memorable. I felt the excitement of major international competition, the pride of standing on the podium and the joy of sharing this amazing experience with other athletes from so many different countries. I feel like this will help me grow as an athlete and a person.”

Reece was selected based on his competitive performance (1st in men’s ski cross, 4th in team ski-snowboard cross – winning all of his heats) and for his positive attitude and encouragement of other athletes throughout the Games.
“He is a tough competitor who made our country shine on the slopes and a fine young man determined to make the most of this experience,” says Isabelle Charest, Canadian Chef de Mission. “He cheered his teammates from the stands and was a constant presence in most cultural and educational activities. He exemplified the spirit of YOG.” She added, “I’m so proud of all of our Canadian athletes for their brilliant performances in competition and for having fully lived up to the ideal of these Games. They have taken advantage of the unique opportunity and shared with other athletes from different countries. They have represented Canada extremely well and I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to lead a team of bright, driven and determined young individuals.”
Six Canadians skiers, three men and three women, represented their country and made us proud at the 2016 Youth Olympic Games in Norway this month. They competed in Slalom, Giant Slalom, Super-G, Alpine Combined, Ski Cross and finally the team events.

"The 2010 Winter Games were a barrel of good times but the single most exciting moment in Whistler's history took place on February 25, 1989 when local ski racer Rob Boyd soared down the Dave Murray Downhill on Whistler Mountain to claim gold in a World Cup Downhill race, the first man to ever do so on Canadian soil.
"Pretty much the whole town was out for the event and Whistler went absolutely bananas, the medals ceremony in then-still-relatively new Whistler Village square was the largest crowd the town had ever hosted and kids I went to elementary school with can still tell you Rob's winning time down to the 1/100 of the second (it was 2:10:03 in case you are wondering). There are a lot of legends in this town, but Rob is our biggest hero."
Antonia Wearmouth (BCST/Grouse Tyee) – "I'm really happy with how today went. The snow froze and set up really well for the race and the sky was bluebird. I've had some really quick turns in GS recently and today I just trusted that. I stuck with what has been working lately and kept the focus up all the way to the finish. I'm excited for what tomorrow will bring!"
Ryan Jazic (Women's BC Team Head Coach) – "The icy snow made for some of the toughest conditions we've had this season, but that seems to be where Antonia excels! She built on a solid first run and there was no holding back on her way to victory."
Nick Cooper (Head Coach BC Alpine) – "It has been an up and down year for Toni in tech. We've known she's had the speed for a while, but hasn't been able to really put down two solid runs in GS yet. Today she did just that and showed what she is really capable of!"
The men raced slalom in challenging conditions that saw only 27 of 104 racers successfully complete 2 runs. BC Team's Dominic Unterberger finished just off the podium in 4th place, Max Peiffer was 7th ( wearing bib 35), Sam Mulligan came in 9th overall and Cameron Alexander rounded out the top 10 (in bib 41) – very respectable for all!
