Gairns of Prince George grabs gold at Tabor Mountain Nor-Am Cup Ski Cross

January 17, 2016, Tabor Mountain (from Ted Clarke, Prince George Citizen) – Tiana Gairns. a 17-year-old member of the Prince George Alpine Ski Club, had no trouble holding her nerves in check as the hometown favourite, and captured both NorAm Cup events Saturday and Sunday. Gairns, who started skiing at local resorts when she was two years old, was the fastest qualifier in an 11-skier women's field Saturday. She reeled off wins in her two heat races and was untouchable in the final, grabbing top spot on the podium over second-place Mara White of Squaw Valley, Calif., and third-place Courtney Hoffos of Invermere. Gairns also won Sunday's race, sharing the podium with silver medalist Zoe Chore of Kimberley and third-place Hoffos.

"It's quite an advantage to know the course. I've had three or four different races here and I know where all the berms are and where the good passing spots are and where I have to defend my line, which all the other girls had to learn just for this race," said Gairns. Starting 53rd, ACA Devo Team’s Jack Crawford is 11th in Europa Cup SG

Canada's development team racer James (Jack) Crawford served notice at Friday's Europa Cup super-G competition, wearing bib #53 and landing in 11th spot at the end of the day, only .66 seconds off the time of race winner Marcus Monsen of Austria. Crawford, 18 and younger brother of CAST skier Candice Crawford, grew up racing in Ontario before joining the Whistler Mountain Ski Club and skiing his way directly to the national team. Other Canadians in the race were Morgan Megarry (ON) 34th, Morgan Pridy (BC) 42nd, Brodie Seger (BC) 46th and Jeffrey Read (AB) 77th.

Broderick Thompson scores World Cup points in Wengen Alpine Combined

In Wengen, Switzerland, where weather conditions have made training and racing a constant struggle, the incredible course workers were able to remove all the snowfall to allow the men’s alpine combined event to be run as scheduled today. Of the two Canadians competing, Whistler, B.C.’s 21-year-old Broderick Thompson was happy with his 27th-place finish. Of the race he said, “I was feeling confident after the downhill run and I used that momentum going into the slalom run. I’m really happy with the solid performance I put down today.”

Thompson secured some coveted World Cup points in today’s race, besting his Wengen alpine combined result from last year’s race.

The alpine combined race favoured the downhill specialists with the Norwegians claiming first and second-place. Kjetil Jansrud was today’s winner by just 0.04 seconds over fellow countryman Aksel Lund Svindal who claimed second. France’s Adrien Theaux rounded out the podium trailing by a mere 0.13 seconds.

The men’s speed team is back in action tomorrow in Wengen, ready to conquer the longest downhill track on the circuit. The Canada Ski Cross team is in Watles, Italy preparing for their first race back tomorrow following time off for the holidays and the para alpine team will be racing giant slalom in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia.
