BC Masters Championships Set for Whistler in February



Bringing a new dimension to BC Masters Alpine racing, the Whistler Mountain Ski Club and the Whistler-Blackcomb Events Department are hosting the 2003 BC Masters Championships for Giant Slalom and Slalom February 14-16.

All Masters racers in Canada and the USA are invited as well as visitors from elsewhere. This will be the first of what is hoped will be an ongoing annual championships to be held at different venues across BC. Other clubs will be canvassed for interest in hosting the 2004 championships.

Kraft Fifth in Pontiac GMC Cup GS



In his second season on the BC Ski Team squad, Vernon's Graham Kraft took home fifth place in 2:05.75 in Friday's men's giant slalom races at Nakiska, AB. James Finlayson of Whistler was fourth in 2:05.70; Aaron Civitarese of Trail was sixth in 2:06.38 and Ben Chaddock of Richmond was 10th in 2:12.44. In the men's GS, Trevor White, fifth after the first run, came back for the gold with a total time of 2:04.83. He edged Gareth Sine of Calgary second in 2:04.90 while Caleb Dyck of Edmonton was third in 2:05.47.

Shona Rubens clocked a two-run time of two minutes and 10.69 seconds. She won the season-opening GS on Thursday as well. Jessica Dakers of Calgary was second in 2:12.00 and Alison Hunter of Aurora, Ont., who skis for the National Alpine Training Centre in Calgary, was third in 2:12.03.

Panorama – Hershey Cup Kudos



Gold medals to all the volunteers from ski clubs across Western Canada (parents, coaches and friends of ski racing) who gathered at Panorama for the Hershey Cup mid-December to work the course and keep gates literally from sun up until sun down. Approximately 470 starts per day for 4 days during the 4 shortest days of the year! The race wouldn't have happened without you! Special Platinum Medals to Bernie Macala (Start Referee) and Bill Scott (Manny Osborne Paradis' Dad) for their extra-special contributions! BC Alpine thanks Carol Simek (Chief of Gates) and her assistants Dave Rae and Cheryl Willard for the Hershey Cup Kudos!
