With sub-zero temperatures plaguing the area all winter long, who could have expected 10 degrees at the top of today's Slalom course and 18 degrees at the bottom by the end of the day?

Matthew Holler (Whistler Mountain Ski Club, Age 14) and Wictoria Glowczynska (Sun Peaks Ski Club, Age 13) both dashed to the finish line with the fourth fastest times in their respective Slalom events. Holler, who was third after the first run, just missed the men's podium by six tenths of a second. Glowczynska narrowly missed the women's podium by only one tenth of a second!

Travis Dawson (Fernie Alpine Ski Team, Age 14) wasn't far behind his team mate finishing in sixth place while James McLean (Whistler Mountain Ski Club, Age 14) ended the day with a very respectable 15th place finish.

Georgia Simmerling (Grouse Mountain Tyee Ski Club, Age 14) had a blistering second run which vaulted her from 22nd after the first run to 15th over all after run number two!

Athletes, coaches, course workers and spectators enjoyed blue skies and bright sunshine throughout the day. “Right after the race, the kids couldn't wait to change into their jeans and T-shirts.” said Floyd Gniewotta, head coach of the Apex Ski Club. “It's just so hot here. They had to make a lot of snow and the course held up surprisingly well in the heat. We're very pleased with the showing from our BC athletes and we're looking forward to lots more great results.”

The Mars Canadian Juvenile Championships will move venues to the Georgian Peaks Club just outside of Collingwood for the giant slalom and super-G disciplines. Wednesday's giant slalom event is expected to begin at approximately 8:30am.
