Canadians came out on top in the last downhill race of the CIBC Coupe Nor-Am Cup Monday. Calgary's Sherry Lawrence and North Vancouver's Manuel Osborne Paradis stood atop the podium after two days of strong downhill racing.
On the women's side, Sherry Lawrence beamed with excitement as she succeeded in turning her bronze place finish from Sunday's downhill, into gold on Monday, with the winning time of one minute, 36.15 seconds. Sherry clocked the fastest speed for the women, dominating the course at a remarkable 125 km an hour.
“I am very happy with today and my overall results here at Lake Louise,” reported Sherry, “I landed a 2nd and 4th place finish during the super-G's and a 3rd and now a first place in downhill. I knew I could it!”
American Kate Bragg took silver in one minute, 36.27 seconds, which also earned her today's Junior Downhill Champion title. Alberta ski team athlete Shona Rubens earned herself 3rd place today with a time of one minute, 36.42 seconds. Shona isn't new to the podium here at the Nor-Am downhill's – her competitive racing earned her a silver medal in Sunday's race.
“I had a pretty solid run overall today” admitted Shona. “Last night the course was really bumpy and this morning I was so impressed with all the course crew's hard work to make the track race ready,” praised Shona.
Christina Risler ended the day in 14th place with a time of one minute, 38.55 seconds. She finished 7th in Sunday's Downhill.

The Canadian Men's development team are ecstatic after holding onto gold and silver during the two days of downhill at Lake Louise. Today saw Manuel Osborne-Paradis wearing gold after his race time of one minute, 31.46 seconds.
“The Nor-Am has been a much better race for me than the World Cup”, reported Manuel. “I feel better on my skis, I'm really getting into it and I can attack!”
Teammate John Kucera and yesterday's first place finisher flew into second place today going 131 km an hour on the Men's Lake Louise downhill track. He finished in one minute, 31.94 seconds.
“It's great to see Manny in first place today rather than another team. I went too low through 'fishnet', but I have high hopes for tomorrow's super G, I'm known as a 'turner' “, admitted John.
John and Manny's exceptional gold and silver place finishes in the past two days' races, put them in very good standing for securing a place on the World Cup circuit.
USA's Jakub Fiala rounded out the podium in third with a one minute, 32.41 second race time.
Canada's David Anderson finished 4th with a time of one minute, 32.46 seconds, while junior racer, Stephan Guay finished 5th. Stephan's 5th place finish is a 6 spot improvement from yesterday's downhill race and again, earned him first place among the junior racers.
The men will race the first of two super- G's tomorrow at Lake Louise in the CIBC Coupe Nor-Am Cup and Canadian fans should expect exciting results from our National team speed racers!
