The 2005 Western Canadian K2 Championships wrapped up on March 22 in Whitehorse, Yukon (entire population of Whitehorse is less than 30,000). Course conditions at Mount Sima were ideal for the four-day event that included young racers from Alberta, British Columbia, Alaska and Yukon.
This was the very first Canadian National Points Race ever held north of the 60th parallel! Judging by the positive comments, it won't be the last.
On Saturday, March 19, athletes trained Super-G on a hard fast course under beautiful conditions, with sunny skies, calm winds and warm temperatures. On Sunday racing got underway with the Men's and Women's Super-G event. Alberta swept the podium on the girl's side with strong finishes by Gillian McKercher, Chloe Burandt, and Emma Carrol taking gold, silver and bronze respectively. BC skiers Benjamin MacLean (Whistler) and Daniel Newmarch (Big White) finished first and second in the men's Super-G, followed closely by Garrett Wilson of Alberta.
