Austria's Fritz Strobl got the Men's World Cup downhill season off to a flying start, grabbing top spot on the podium at the Lake Louise Winterstart World Cup presented by Husky. The youth movement was led by Canadian skier Erik Guay, of Mont Tremblant, Que., who was the third racer down the course on a snowy overcast day in Lake Louise and the top Canadian in 17th with a time of 1:42.07. Wearing bib #43, Calgary's John Kucera was delighted with his 25th place finish in a time of 1:42.70.
