The first day of the Bob Parson's Memorial Super G race got underway Sunday under perfect conditions. The volunteers worked tirelessly on Saturday to clear the course of fresh snow to get it ready for training. Fortunately, the 20cm of forecasted new snow did not materialize on Saturday night and the racers were greeted with a hard course. The WMSC racers swept the overall podium for both men and women.

Ben Podborski captured Gold, posting the fastest time of the day 1:15.10, nearly two seconds ahead of second place Michael Kearney at 1:17.04. K2 racer Ian Morrison took home the Bronze at 1:17.77. For the females it was Gold for Victoria Whitney at 1:17.37, Silver for K2 Athlete Brynne Benbow at 1:18.57 and Bronze for Calindy Ramsden.

The Bob Parson's Memorial is named after the late Bob Parsons who was committed to junior ski racing and saw the need for junior skiers to have the opportunity to race downhill. This race has been held on the Whistler Back Bowl, Dave Murray, and Green Acres courses and on the Blackcomb Panorama/Cloud Nine track. The Parsons family became members of the Whistler Mountain Ski Club in the late 60's. As the Parsons children became involved in ski racing, Bob traveled from race to race helping in course preparation and setup. He formed and led the infamous Weasel Workers who were named after the Weasel section of the downhill. In those days, there were no winch cats and this section had to be boot packed, shoveled and raked by hand. Bob was Chief of Course for all for all of the major downhill races at Whistler until his death in 1979. Bob was one of the original organizers of the Vancouver Ski Team, which was formed in 1969 and later evolved into what is now the BC Ski Team. A memorial trust fund has been set up in his name and bursaries are presented to up and coming ski racers at the annual Bob Parsons Memorial Golf Tournament in the spring.
