Paul Stutz of Banff, Alta., and BC Ski Team's Alison Leighton of Whistler, stood atop the Slalom Podium Saturday to open the third stop on the Pontiac GMC Cup being held at Silver Star Resort.

Stutz, who just fell short in trying to qualify for the Olympic Games, clocked a two-run time of one minute and 24.34 seconds clocking the fastest time on both runs. Trevor White of Calgary was second at 1:25.77 and Jeff Crompton of Calgary third at 1:27.15.

''I was hoping to be at the Games at this time but I'm happy to have the opportunity to race here with few events going on at this time,'' said Stutz. ''I had a really solid first run but I was a bit wild on the second. Still I managed to hold on to the lead.''

Several skiers struggled on the second run.

''The snow was pretty soft and it was hard to get a good grip,'' said White, also second after the first run. ''Despite the conditions I was able to stay relaxed and have fun out there.''

Cromtpon earned his fourth medal in five races this season on the circuit.

''There was a funny groove on the course in the second run so it was hard to figure out,'' said Crompton. ''My runs were O.K. but I probably could have allowed myself to let go more.''

In the women's slalom, Leighton placed first clocking 1:38.13 over two runs. It was her first win and third medal in five races this season on the circuit. Carmel McElroy of Calgary was second in 1:38.33 and Elli Terwiel of Sun Peaks, B.C., third in 1:38.61.

''I skied the way I wanted,'' said Leighton, 18, who takes over the overall lead in the Western standings with her victory. ''I stayed relaxed and tried to do the basics. I've had a pretty good year in the slalom this year.''

McElroy earned her second podium finish this season.

''I didn't hold back anything on the second run,'' said McElroy. ''I went for it.''

For Terwiel it was her first career podium finish in slalom. She was second after the first run

''On the second run I just wanted to attack,'' said the 16-year-old who won two medals recently at the Italian junior nationals. ''Unfortunately it just wasn't as solid as the first.''
