With daylight hours at a premium on almost the shortest day of the year, the Race Organizing Committee at Panorama and the Windermere Valley Ski Club has once again pulled off an impressive feat of planning and organization. 114 men and 84 women raced in a two-run giant slalom Tuesday to open the 2006/07 Mars BC Cup race series.
It was Whistler’s Victoria Whitney (BC Team Training Group/Whistler Mountain Ski Club) who sat in 4th place after the first run knowing she would have to put down a gutsy second run to hold onto that position. She nailed it to finish 4th in a total of two minutes, 14.11 seconds behind Sophia Smith of the USA (2:13.43), Smaranda Munteanu of Romania (2:13.75), and Kristina Repcinova of Slovakia (2:14.02). Whitney was second in the Junior category, and was notably the top J1 and the fastest Canadian of the day!
