Terwiel, Simmerling, Hadley on Pontiac GMC Slalom Podium at Sun Peaks | BC Alpine Ski Association

SUN PEAKS, B.C. – Elli Terwiel of Sun Peaks, B.C., posted her second consecutive slalom win on her home hill on Monday at the Pontiac GMC Cup alpine skiing competition while Cameron Stuart of Calgary took the men’s slalom.

The women’s slalom on Monday was closer than Sunday’s contest but Terwiel prevailed again in 1:33.67 after building more than a half-second lead on the first run. Alexandra Parker of Calgary went 0.01 seconds faster than Terwiel on the second run to win the silver in 1:34.15 while Georgia Simmerling of West Vancouver was third for the second straight day at 1:34.60.

‘’Yesterday I skied better on the second run,’’ said Terwiel. ‘’But overall I’m happy with my consistency of late. I know I can go out there and lay down two strong runs. It’s a big confidence boost. I kept my focus on engaging my shoulders, keeping my hands ahead of me and maintaining my balance. My technique is still a work in progress but it’s getting better and better.’’

Parker, 17, was in second place after the first run and took a shot at the gold.

‘’It was pretty good,’’ said the first-year Alberta provincial team member. ‘’But I wanted to win. I did some things well but it wasn’t excellent. Right now I’m just trying to go for it and not worry about how I finish.’’

Simmerling also wanted to do better.

‘’Right now I’m putting down great second runs,’’ she said. ‘’But I need better first runs. I’m too tentative.’’

In the men’s slalom, Cameron Stuart posted the fastest times on both runs for his first victory this season in 1:31.19. Brady Leman of Calgary was second in 1:31.75 and Jonathan Hadley of Whistler, B.C., third in 1:34.08.

‘’I’m definitely pleased to get the win,’’ said Stuart. ‘’It was awesome to put down two solid runs. It’s a great competition here with the Alberta team on hand. The first run was the key. I was aggressive and got myself really fired up for the race. I was definitely in my game mode today, nothing broke my focus.’’

Leman, Sunday’s slalom winner, wasn’t going to be satisfied unless he held the gold.

‘’I made a big mistake on each run,’’ said Leman. ‘’On the first I lost an edge and that cost me time. Then on the second I had bad start and wound up playing catch up.’’

For Hadley it was his first career medal on the circuit.

‘’It’s a big thrill to get the medal,’’ said Hadley, 20. ‘’I just went for it today. I’ve had good success in the speed events this year so it’s nice to put together a strong slalom performance.’’

Competition continues through to Wednesday.  This is a link to a web page. LIVE TIMING
