J1 High Performance Athletes home for start of school, but not for long | BC Alpine Ski Association

Report from Head Coach Gregor Druzina

The J1 High Performance athletes and coaches have just returned from a 10-day slalom camp at Mt. Hood in Oregon. After a few bad weather days, we ended up with 7 good days on snow. The focus of the camp was slalom technique as well as high volume skiing in stubbies and gates. We used the rainy days for some productive dryland sessions.

This was the first time that the whole J1 High Performance Group was able to be together at the same camp, so team building was a big part of the experience. As you may know, Mackenzie Patterson (WMSC) decided prior to this camp that she would not continue with her ski racing career at this level, so she was not with us. We’ll miss her and we wish her the best for the coming season!

We were happy to be able to invite a couple of athletes to train with us at the camp – Devin Spence (Big White Racers) was with us for all 10 days and Mackensey Young (Fernie Alpine Ski Team) joined our group for the last 4 days.

School is starting this week and all the athletes will be settling into their classes just in time to leave again on September 9th for a week-long slalom and GS training camp at Farnham Glacier. You definitely have to be a disciplined, self-motivated student to train and compete in sport at this level!

Fernie Alpine Ski Team Coach Mark Deneau will be helping us out at Farnham while J1 High Performance Coach Pierre Luc Dumoulin travels to Chile to work with the BC Ski Team. Joining the BC Team for training in South America will be J1 High Performance athlete Michael Cadman (WMSC).
