It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Matt Sawchenko | BC Alpine Ski Association

We are sorry to have to report that a BC Alpine family has been devastated by the plane crash that took place on Thormanby Island, BC on Sunday, November 16th, 2008.

Matt Sawchenko, son of Linda Sawchenko, was employed as an equipment operator for Peter Kiewit Sons Co. at the time of the accident that tragically took his life. We at BC Alpine Ski Association wish to convey our deepest condolences to Linda and all of Matt’s family for their tremendous loss.

Matt, who is one of four brothers, grew up ski racing at Big White. From there he moved to Trail, BC with his mom and got involved as a ski coach at the Red Mountain and Salmo Ski Clubs. He later moved to Vancouver to begin working for Peter Kiewit Sons Co.

Recently, Matt and his partner Teresa moved back to Trail to be closer to his family, including his mother Linda, who is a long time and well loved BC Alpine volunteer and race official.

Matt was 26 years old. He and Teresa were looking forward to the birth of their first child in several months.

Please check back for more information as it becomes available.
