BC Ski Team athlete Celine Rytz (Fernie Alpine Ski Team) raced to the first FIS win of her young career Saturday on opening day of the Lake Louise Miele Alberta Cup technical series. Team mate Jocelyn Ramsden (Whistler Mountain Ski Club) wrapped up the day in 7th place.
Rytz, who was first out of the gate in the first run of the giant slalom competition was in the lead at the start of run number two. Then came the long wait while 29 other racers finished their second run.
“I wanted to win, but it hasn’t happened for me yet, so I was kind of skeptical about my chances”, said Rytz. “It’s a real confidence boost to start first, but then I was starting 30th in the second run so I had my music on trying to stay calm. We just got back from Quebec where I was training really well, so I did come here with a lot of confidence in my skiing.”
Race conditions at Lake Louise were favourable, explained Rytz. “Visibility was good, it wasn’t too cold and there was a downhill wind at our backs, which I was happy about.”
The racers will have another chance in GS on Sunday before switching to slalom on Monday and Tuesday. Rytz, who’s best event is actually slalom, is hoping for more success over the next few days!
