What: The Youth Olympic Games were created by the International Olympic Committee to inspire young people to engage in sport and learn about Olympic values. This event will be the first Winter Youth Olympics to ever be held – the first summer event took place in Singapore in 2010.
Over 1,000 athletes aged 14 to 18 from over 60 countries will compete in seven sports. The four alpine skiers selected to represent Canada will compete in slalom, giant slalom, super-G, combined and a parallel team event, in which two male and two female skiers from the same country join forces to take on their opponents in head-to-head duels. The ski cross athletes will first compete in qualifications held Jan. 18 and then athletes who make it through will compete in the finals on Jan. 20.
