The 2013 U18 Canadian Championships got underway Saturday with men's and ladies' slalom competitions at Osler Bluff, Ontario. It was a stellar day for the BC contingent, landing five top-15 results from the men and four top-15 from the girls. Leading the day was BC Ski Team member Martin Grasic from the Windermere Valley Ski Club, whose lightning fast first run secured him the fastest combined time of one minute, 44.41 seconds for the gold medal. Teammate Brodie Seger of the Whistler Mountain Ski Club, who won two Ontario FIS slalom races this week, had the fastest 2nd run, but settled for 4th place just 0.01 of a second off the podium in 1:44.75. In the women's race it was BC Team's Stephanie Gartner of the Fernie Alpine Ski Team who found the podium again, finishing third in 1:50.01.

Luckily I managed to hold on. Seeing that ‘1’ on the timing board when I came down was just the greatest feeling. Brodie Seger (Whistler Mountain Ski Club) – "Today was a bit of an odd day with some ups and downs. I felt a bit sluggish in the morning and first run didn't exactly go as planned. The second run was a bit wild and rough, but I guess that's sometimes a good sign because I ended up winning the run (by a hair). In the end I repeated my exact results from last year's U18 national slalom, but it was great to have a teammate representing BC on the top of the podium."
Blake Ramsden (Whistler Mountain Ski Club) – "Today was a pretty good day. It was awesome to have BC pick up its third win in a row out here in Ontario. However, some mistakes and conservative skiing kept me from the podium today. We're gonna come out blazing tomorrow, and make it six wins in six races for BC."
Patrick Carry (Fernie Alpine Ski Team) – "I wasn't very happy with my day, not finishing on the first run. I am really inspired by what my teammates are doing and I hope to channel that positive energy into my skiing and have a better day tomorrow."
