Gartner 3rd Junior – Panorama Nor-Am slalom
PANORAMA MOUNTAIN VILLAGE (Dec. 13, 2014) – The BC Ski Team women hit the ground running at their first Nor-Am Cup competition of the season held at Panorama Mountain Resort. Saturday's slalom race was a huge confidence booster for rookie Stefanie Fleckenstein of the Whistler Mountain Ski Club, who finished 10th overall with a two run time of one minute, 33.97 seconds. Her 2nd run was the 4th fastest on the day and she was the second best U18 in the race!
"I was really excited to race my first Nor-Am," said Fleckenstein. "Without really knowing what the competition would be like, I set a goal for myself to place top 30 overall. I am really happy with my skiing and I shattered my original goal, but I know I've got a lot left in me, so I can't wait for tomorrow!"
Teammate Stephanie Gartner from the Fernie Alpine Ski Team wrapped up the day with an impressive 6th place finish and a combined time of 1:32.82. The result was good for third place on the Junior podium. Antonia Wearmouth, also in her first year with the BC Team, did not finish. The race was won by Ontario's Candice Crawford in 1:29.97.
"I’m very happy kicking off this Nor-Am series with some points, and proud of my team mate to be right there with me," said Gartner. "My first run was strong and consistent, putting me in a great position for second run. Hopefully tomorrow I can put another two runs together and keep this ball rolling throughout the week!"
"This was a very positive beginning to the series," said Ryan Jazic, head coach of the women's BC Ski Team. "All the girls competed with the right process and it gives them the confidence that they can be on the podium. They are excited to push harder!"

The men raced super-G Saturday at Panorama. Jeffrey Frisch took the win in 52.37, followed by Conrad Pridy (WMSC) in second and American Tanner Farrow in third. Tyler Werry (CAST/Fernie Alpine Ski Team) and Broderick Thompson (CAST/WMSC) came in 5th and 7th respectively. The BC Team's Riley Seger (WMSC) finished 44th, Dominic Unterberger (Revelstoke Ski Club) 56th, and Sam Mulligan (Grouse Tyee) 72nd. Teammate Max Peiffer (WMSC) did not finish.
Sam Mulligan, first year BC Team racer from Grouse Tyee Ski Club reflects on the season so far. "The last couple weeks have been a great learning experience for all of us. Running lake louise for the first time was really cool. We had an all-star coaching staff and I gained lots of speed knowledge from them. Although the results have been average, there has been huge progress in my skiing and mental approach. We're "checking off all our boxes" as Johnny says and I’m excited to see big things from the team."
