Kimberley Alpine Team Giant Slalom and Night Slalom Races Get Athletes’ Vote for the Most Fun at a Ski Race this Year!

Photo from BC Alpine website: www.bcalpine.comKimberley Alpine Team (KAT) held a ski race Jan 31 and Feb 1, with the support of Kimberley Alpine Resort and Teck. Ten clubs and over 130 racers from Manitoba to Rossland competed in Giant Slalom (GS), and night slalom.

The highlight of the event was the night slalom. Kimberley Alpine Resort provided great music, a laser light show and sled rides to the top of the course for the finalists.

Athletes, coaches and parents raced the dual slalom course for a chance to race again and ultimately to win! Katie Clark, Kimberley Alpine Team racer, and one of the night slalom winners, has skied in both the Alberta and BC divisions. She said, “I have never had so much FUN! Racing head to head with my friends into a crowd with music and a light show WOW!”

Kimberley Alpine Team would like to thank Jon Blair and Nathalie Cordiez for their vision, determination and hard work for making this event possible. In addition KAT thanks all the volunteers who came from other clubs. Without them events like this could not happen.

Big White hosts first event of 2015 Matrix Western Canada Ski Cross Series

Photo from BC Alpine website: www.bcalpine.comPhoto from BC Alpine website: www.bcalpine.com

Rarely would you ever see wet, soggy conditions at Big White in January, but the pineapple express that hit the coastal mountains made its way to the Okanagan, home of the famous champagne powder this past weekend!

Heavy cloud and damp conditions gave way to rain on Saturday, but it did not dampen the spirits of over 120 Ski Cross hopefuls. Racers from BC and Alberta registered for the event, and kicked off the first stop in the Western Canada ski Cross Open Series.

What a difference a day can make. Saturday’s rain gave way to clear skies and warm temperatures on Sunday.

A hard track in the morning made for some stellar photo finishes in the early heats, but the softening snow was too much for the track and the older racers. The 8 final heats that would determine the winners for U16/18 men’s and the U16 ladies were in jeopardy. Race organizers struggled with the decision, but racer safety prevailed and the race was cancelled.

There were over 100 volunteer shifts during the 2 day event, and everyone gave all they had to preserve the race, but Mother Nature won out in the end.

Regarded as one of the top ski cross tracks in Western Canada, Big White Resort staff also contributed to the preparation and execution of the race located in Telus Park. Next stop in the series is Fernie on February 7 & 8.
