Team BC roster finalized for Prince George 2015 Canada Winter Games

BIG WHITE (Jan. 23, 2015) – BC Alpine finalized its Canada Winter Games selection Friday at a ski cross trials at Big White Resort, concluding with four ski racers named to Team BC to represent the province at the upcoming Canada Winter Games in Prince George.

Over 50 skiers battled for the final four roster spots at the ski cross event, with two male skiers from the Fernie Alpine Ski Team, one lady from the Whistler Mountain Ski Club, and one from Grouse Tyee claiming the spots.

The Fernie racers – Devin Mittertreiner and Ryan Finley – had some of the fastest times of the day to hold off skiers from all corners of the province. On the ladies side, Sierra King (WMSC) and Nicole Mah (Grouse Tyee) were ahead of the competitive pack.

Selection for the 10 CWG alpine spots was finalized earlier in the week, based on series points (Provincial Ranking System – PRS). The addition of the ski cross qualifiers today brings the team total to 14 skiers.

“We have a very competitive team and I expect we will be the province to beat at the Games,” said Gordie Bowles, BC Alpine Athletic Director. “We have potential for medals in all disciplines and we have prepared our skiers well for this important event.”

The newly minted team is staying in Big White over the weekend to train and prepare as a team for the Games.

Red Mountain Showcases Province’s Best U16 Racers at Teck Open Event

RED MOUNTAIN RESORT (January 19, 2015) – Fog, wind and two Kootenay-style snowfalls at Red Mountain during the Teck Open Series were somewhat fierce, but the province's best U16 racers battled a much tougher adversary: each other!

With selection for the Canada Winter Games on the line, in addition to the newly developed Club Points awarding, which includes all attending club racers, competitors hurled themselves down the legendary Backtrail in a pair of giant slaloms, and one slalom event over three days at the West Kootenay resort.

With the newly-minted Training Centre at Red boasting ideal training conditions prior to the event, the snow came in droves over the three days of competition, putting the race organizers from the Red Mountain Racers in a work-hard-or-lose situation, but the courses held up successfully and smiles were aplenty.

Grouse-Tyee scored two Canada Winter Games roster spots on Team BC, and finished second overall behind WMSC in the Club Points awards, with the Fernie Alpine Ski Team finishing third.

The Whistler Mountain Ski Club (WMSC) excelled, particularly in the men’s field, claiming a handful of medals during the series and qualifying a total of 6 athletes for the much-coveted roster spots on Team BC for the upcoming Canada Winter Games in Prince George, February 13 to March 1, 2015.

In addition to Canada Games selections, B.C.’s top U16 female and male skiers – Kristina Natalenko (Grouse-Tyee) and Kaspar Woolley (WMSC), earned an invitation to the Trofeo Topolino event as part of a Team Canada group that will be attending the races in late February.

This year families came from as far away as Lake Louise, Golden and Calgary.  Once again the vibe at Whitewater lived up to its reputation. This was 2 days of slalom racing, with 103 competitors and a total of 4 one-run races over the weekend. They ranged in age from 10 to 72! We have 2 masters racers in our club, ages 71 and 72. Kirk Jensen, GM of the Whitewater Ski Resort foreran the race, and his coach from his youth, Mike Koper, was at the race with a team from Lake Louise. Mike took the opportunity to coach Kirk in the start just like 30 years ago!

We had perfect weather, sunshine and cold temps. The snow was hard, making for fair races due to a consistent track for all racers. We have a very strong field of racers in our Kootenay Zone, who will go on to Provincial series races for U16 next weekend at Red Mountain, and for U14 at Silver Star in February. The next Kootenay Zone race will be a giant slalom in Kimberly Jan31/Feb1.

There are a couple of Whitewater Freeride Team athletes on the Whitewater Ski Team this year. It is becoming well known that a good alpine ski racer makes for a strong Freeride athlete. Whitewater is known for its ‘big mountain’ culture of powder skiers, but there is a certain level of ‘ski race culture’ starting to build. The whitewater ski team did borrow some Freeride big mountain culture, and were successful this weekend due, in part, to their pre-run power stance – this is where they breathe in the power of the mountains, and breathe out the butterflies!

Coast Zone Teck racing kicked off at Whistler’s Dave Murray Training Centre

U14 Teck Race Series January 10-11, 2015 – Hosted by Whistler Mountain Ski Club

Usually by this time of year the Coast Zone racers have had at least one race under their belts. This year’s slow start with snow pushed the series to mid-January but that did not seem to quash the enthusiasm of the athletes. For some of the racers we were told that the Friday training session on Whistler, whether in gates or TFS, was their first meaningful day on snow.

This year’s race series was a bit different not having the U16’s in the event. With 3 Slalom races it meant that the racers were getting a nice amount of starts which was awesome to see. The enthusiasm of the kids cheering around the start tent was contagious. There were 51 girls and 54 boys entered in this series and Saturday had two – 1 run Slalom’s and Sunday had one – 2 run Slalom race. The kids and vollies certainly didn’t get any breaks in weather on Saturday with the fog hanging around all day. The race pressed on without a hitch and the Saturday races were exciting with some very impressive results considering the first race of the season. The girls 1^st race had Maja WOOLEY in 1^st, Gigi KRANJC in 2^nd and Arabella NG rounding out the WMSC podium. WMSC skiers filled the 4^th to 8 positions with Ava LANGEVIN in 9^th and Emily Gabrielle JOHNSTON in 10^th – both girls from Mount Washington. The boys first run had Nathan ROMANIN in 1^st, Kieran HARLEY in 2^nd with Skylar BEAUREGARD completing the podium. This race saw some great representation from Seymour, Grouse, Cypress and Mt Washington to complete the Top 10

The girls 2^nd run on this day was an exact replica of the top 3 in the 1^st race. The lone girl that upset the WMSC Top 10 sweep was Emily Gabrielle JOHNSTON securing the 5^th spot. The boys 2^nd run saw Nathan ROMANIN in 1^st, Blair NELLIS in 2^nd with Eric SMITH in 3^rd. Once again the balance of the Top 10 saw some great representation from the other clubs including 4 of the Top 10 from Grouse.

Racing on Sunday was quite different from Saturday. The fog had lifted, visibility was great from start to finish and the snow conditions were perfect for racing without any notable differences in snow conditions from the first 10 girls to the last 10 boys. Thanks to some decisions made by Dale Stephens of WMSC the Dave Murray National Training Centre was perfect for racing. This day saw a traditional combined Slalom race and the kids delivered.

The girls combined race was a thriller and had a common theme with the other races. Top spot went to Maja WOLLEY, Gigi KRANJC in 2^nd and Rosie SMITH in 3^rd. WMSC had 7 of the Top 10 spots with another great showing by Emily Gabrielle JOHNSTON from Mount Washington securing 5^th spot.

The boy’s race was also very exciting with some great athletic moves and some huge lessons with course inspection. Just like the girls, the boys saw some familiar names in Nathan ROMANIN securing 1^st and Eric SMITH in 2^nd with Tait JORDAN in 3^rd and completing the WMSC podium sweep. Grouse had 4 of the Top 10 spots. In this race we saw a very impressive spread of 6.87 seconds between Nathan and Eric. We tried to get a quote from Nathan but we couldn’t catch him.
