No one told the BC Ski Team that the season is winding down, as they continue to improve and build on their successes. Sunday the final Keurig Cup FIS race event moved from Whistler to Grouse to begin the first of two slalom competitions for both men and women.

On the men's side Broderick Thompson (BC Ski Team/WMSC) finished second overall, behind reigning Canadian slalom champion Erik Read of Alberta, with a combined time of one minute, 42.49 seconds. Thompson was "pumped" with today's finish, but declared "I have much more in the tank for tomorrow and I'm looking forward to pushing hard for the last race of the year!"

Thompson was joined on the podium by teammate Dominic Unterberger (Revelstoke Ski Club) who finished 3rd in 1:43.01. "Coming into today I knew I could be fast and that I had to go for it to get a result," said Untergerger. "First run went according to plan, but I made a couple big mistakes between sections of good skiing in my second run. I'm happy with the outcome of the day and pumped to share the podium with Brod again!"

Men's BC Team coach Nick Cooper is thrilled to see the momentum building, as everyone hopes to end the season on a high note. "The boys are ripping and getting the results they deserve," explained Cooper. "One more day of this long season where everyone has scored, and all have had great days. We're definitely looking forward to tomorrow!

Sunday's slalom was a chance for Alix Wells of the BC Ski Team (Prince George Ski Club) to battle the elements, and the flu, and climb onto the podium finishing third overall in a two-run time of  1:52.80.

Monday's slalom at Grouse Mountain will mark the official end to the FIS race season and the overall Keurig Cup winners will be announced. Follow along with LIVE TIMING

BC Ski Team's Martin Grasic showed that Friday's amazing giant slalom performance was no accident when he landed in second place again Saturday behind Canadian Alpine Ski Team member Ben Thomsen. both Thomsen and Grasic are from Invermere and the Windermere Valley Ski Club.

Grasic could not rest on his laurels following that stellar GS race Friday, as the pressure was on to do it all over again on Saturday. "I couldn't be happier with the past two days in Whistler," he said." I was pretty worried today because I knew I needed another result. I tried to use the same approach as yesterday and was stoked to get an even better score. It's a really nice way to finish off a tough season in GS, adjusting to the huge equipment changes."

Thomsen wins, Grasic 2nd in Whistler Keurig Cup Spring Series Giant Slalom

The 2014 Keurig Cup Spring Series, and final FIS race event of the season, kicked off Friday in Whistler with men's and women's giant slalom competitions. BC Ski Team technical specialist Martin Grasic of Invermere (Windermere Valley Ski Club) skied to a career best result with a two-run time of two minutes, 45.05 seconds, finishing second only to Olympian and "Canadian Cowboy" Ben Thomsen (CAST), also of Invermere, who won the race in 2:44.81.

"I'm super happy with today's race; it was my best result ever by a lot," said a relieved Grasic who clocked the fastest second run time of the day. "I'm glad I finally was able to put down a race run the way I do in training. I was shaking with excitement in the finish and I hope I can have some more days like this in the next few races here in Whistler and at Grouse."

"What a great day for Martin," exclaimed men's BC Team coach Nick Cooper. "It was a brutal day for weather, visability, and course conditions, but the guys that were willing to fight were rewarded. Martin had a game plan, stuck to it, and skied the second run with absolutely no fear. All the guys are tired and battling like crazy, so I'm looking forward to the next three days of spring series."

BC Ski Team's Alix Wells of the Prince George Ski Club was the top- finishing BC racer in the women't GS, coming 5th in 2:39.74.

Stay tuned to the action with LIVE TIMING. Another GS is on the calendar in Whistler Saturday, before a quick change of venue and two slalom races at Grouse Mountain.

Moving into its 22nd year, Whistler Cup has become the largest and most important ski race in North America, and internationally, for the world’s best 12 to 15-year-old ski racers. Whistler Blackcomb is proud to welcome 450 athletes from 25 countries to this year’s event, April 4 to 6, 2014.
 
The Whistler Cup, presented by Rio Tinto Alcan, has an incredible track record of showcasing future stars. Former participants and Olympic medalist in Vancouver and Sochi include the USA’s Lindsey Vonn (Gold Downhill & Bronze SG, Vancouver), Julia Mancuso (Bronze Combined, Sochi) and Mikaela Shiffrin (Gold Slalom, Sochi), Slovenia’s Tina Maze, Italy’s Christof Innerhofer (Silver Downhill and Bronze combined, Sochi) and Austria’s Nicole Hosp (Silver combined and Bronze SG Sochi), Anna Fenninger (Gold SG and Silver GS, Sochi) and Mathias Meier (Gold Downhill Sochi).
