Ramsden wins; McCarthy, Gartner duke it out in Panorama Keurig Cup Slaloms

PANORAMA, B.C. (Dec. 21, 2013) – BC Ski Team racer Blake Ramsden (Whistler Mountain Ski Club) claimed his first FIS slalom win today in Panorama, holding off a group of hard-charging youngsters in frigid and foggy conditions.

"To win a slalom race at this point in the season is a huge confidence booster," said Ramsden. "I have been focusing mostly on speed lately, so it's great to know that my tech skiing is still going well. It's also great to be sharing the podium with my teammate Pat! Hopefully there will be more from the BC team in the next two days!"

Ramsden’s teammate Patrick Carry (Fernie Alpine Ski Team) finished third after arriving this morning from Colorado where he was racing in Nor-Am competitions over the past three weeks.

It was a much different looking podium than yesterday when Canadian Alpine Ski Team racer Paul Stutz had a commanding win but was not available for racing today.

On the women’s side, Jocelyn McCarthy, of the Alberta Ski Team raced to two wins over Stephanie Gartner (Canadian Development Team/Fernie Alpine Ski Team) and Stephanie Irwin (Canadian Alpine Ski Team). BC Ski Team racer Alix Wells finished fourth and sixth over the two days of slalom races.

“It’s been a long stretch for most of the BC Ski Team after nearly a month of racing in Colorado but I’m very happy to see them show up and ready to go,” said Gordie Bowles, Athletic Director. “There’s a reasonably deep field here showing promise for a bright future. The race-within-the-race is interesting to watch with this young field.”

Competition continues tomorrow and Monday with two giant slalom races.

Crawford stuns field; Bermel wins again at Keurig Cup super-G in Panorama

PANORAMA, B.C. (Dec 19, 2013) – Whistler Mountain Ski Club newcomer James (Jack) Crawford stunned the men’s field today in Panorama, B.C., mounting an impressive charge from a late start position to take the super-G with a time of one minute 1.27 seconds, while Kimberley racer Rebecca swept the women’s super-G with another win.

Crawford, 16, blazed from start position 41 in cold conditions, leading a strong charge from 1997-born skiers from B.C., including Riley Seger (7th and most improved), Sam Mulligan (9th) and Max Peiffer (11th). Seger and Peiffer are with the Whistler Mountain Ski Club and Mulligan competes with the Vancouver Ski Team.

Meanwhile, Bermel had a near mistake-free run to hold off American Elyse Burandt and up-and-comer Meg Cumming, of the Big White Racers. Cumming finished as the second fastest U18, while local racer Courtney Hoffos finished as the third U18.

Racing continues tomorrow with men’s and women’s slalom.

Kimberley’s Bermel wins; young guns show mettle at first Keurig Cup race

PANORAMA, B.C. (Dec 18, 2013) – The veterans held the fort during the first day of FIS Keurig Cup super-G races for the 2013-14 season in Panorama, BC, with a few FIS rookies showing there is a strong crop of up-and-comers in Western Canada.

Rebecca Bermel, of Kimberley, B.C., topped the women’s field while teammate Gina Norton, also of Kimberley, was runner-up. Both Bermel and Norton are racing for the Windermere Valley Ski Club this season. Whistler Mountain Ski Club racer Rae Swette, took the bronze medal on the women’s side, while first-year FIS racers Antonia Wearmouth (Vancouver Ski Team, Grouse/Tyee) and local racer Courtney Hoffos (Windermere Valley Ski Club) finished fourth and fifth respectively.

The story was similar on the men’s side, with U21 racers Austin Dean and Cai Yamamoto – both from the Pacific Northwest Ski Association – topping the men’s field with Curtis McKillop (Banff, Alb.) finishing third. BC Ski Team racer Blake Ramsden, of North Vancouver, was the best BC racer in fifth, just ahead of Steven Fry, of the Red Mountain Racers.

First-year FIS skier Riley Seger (Whistler Mountain Ski Club) blazed his way to an eighth-place finish, starting in position No. 69. Seger’s teammates Max Peiffer and Jack Crawford also attacked from the back, finishing 10th and 16th respectively.

BC Team’s Wells on comeback trail finishes 20th in Colorado Nor-Am slalom

Vail, Colorado (Tuesday, Dec 17, 2013) – 18-year-old Alix Wells of Prince George and the Prince George Ski Club had the breakthrough she was looking for Tuesday, when she put two solid runs together to secure a 20th place finish in a Nor-Am Cup slalom race in Colorado. Wells has fought back from three leg fractures in as many years, and is in her first full season back with the BC Ski Team.

Starting with bib number 66, there was a good chance the course would be a little rough by the time she got to the start gate, but under "sunny skies and the absolute best conditions you could ask for", according to coach, JP Daigneault, the track held up better than expected and Wells found herself in 30th position after run #1. Of course this meant starting first in the second run!

"I approached this morning's race like another day of training, which allowed me to ski without nerves and with ease", said Wells. "When I found out I was sitting in 30th and would be starting first, I was initially nervous, but then I realized how smooth the track would be, which would let me ski my own line. I'm pretty excited right now, and after two challenging days of GS, today's result couldn't have come at a better time. My confidence is back to where I need it to be. Thanks to the coaches, Paul Lavoie (our tireless ski technician) and everyone else who made this an awesome day!"
