The U16 Can-Am Western Championships at Panorama Mountain Village will consist of four days of racing as outlined below:

Team BC Closes U18 Nationals with Gold for Seger; Grasic, MacLachlan 4th

Aaron Speden (Women's BC Team Coach) –  “It’s been a great U18 National race series! Today's GS wrapped up a week of races in Ontario that saw many successes from Team BC and the BC Team women. Hallie MacLachlan of the BC Ski Team and the Fernie Alpine Ski Team finished 4th in Tuesday’s GS, followed closely by young Kelly Steeves of the Whistler Mountain Ski Club who closed the day in 5th place. BC Team athletes Stephanie Gartner and Emma King finished 7th and 13th respectively.”

Hallie MacLachlan (BC Team/Fernie Alpine Ski Team) – "I'm very happy with the way things have turned out for me this week. Not only did I impress myself in the slalom races, but I had a couple consistent days in GS. Canada’s Steinke, Thompson in top 20 as world junior ski champs wrap up
 

MONT-SAINTE-ANNE, QUE. (Feb. 26, 2013) — Chris Steinke and Broderick Thompson (BCST/WMSC) embodied the spirit of a young Canadian team short on experience but full of enthusiasm on Tuesday as they battled their way from the back of the pack to finish 16th and 18th, respectively, in the final event at the FIS World Junior Ski Championships.

Steinke, of Gatineau, Que., fought his way down a rough, bumpy track on the first run after starting 59th and then took advantage of better snow conditions in the second run to earn top Canadian honours in the men’s slalom. It was a similar story for Thompson, of Whistler, B.C., who started 61st and managed to climb into the top 20.

With Trevor Philp, of Calgary, Alta., – arguably Canada’s best individual podium threat – ending up as one of more than 50 racers who did not finish, the Canadian team goes away from the world juniors with bronze in the team event and a lot of experience in the bank for several first-year competitors.

“It’s been an amazing experience competing against the best in the world – the future of ski racing. Everybody’s here,” said 19-year-old Steinke, a member of the Quebec Ski Team who skis out of the Mont-Sainte-Marie club.

“Most of our team are 1993s. The experience of feeling it out this year – still trying, still expecting to do pretty good – means that next year it will be easier to be more confident. It’s been a really, really good experience.”

Steinke moved up to 26th after the first run and had the 13th-fastest second run of the day to clock a two-run combined time of two minutes, 5.83 seconds.

“I’m happy with that. Sixteenth is better than expected,” Steinke said. “First run was a big, big struggle starting 59th. It was pretty darned bumpy. I was super excited to start the second run and I think I took pretty good advantage of starting early.”

Thompson had a two-run combined time of 2:06.23, while Philp, William Schuessler Bédard, of Saint-Jean-Sur-Richelieu, Que., William St-Germain, of St-Ferréol-Les-Neiges, Que., and Morgan Megarry, of Collingwood, Ont., did not finish their first runs.

“For Chris, I would say that’s a great result starting from where he did,” said Jean-François Bélisle, head coach of Canada’s men’s team for the world juniors. “A lot of guys didn’t finish – the track got chewed up and it’s a tough track even when conditions are perfect.

“A guy like Broderick had a really tough week on the speed side. He pushed through some adversity and today he stepped it up and got a top-20 which for a 1994 (racer) is good.”
