Tora Hoshizaki of Edmonton is top Canadian finishing 3rd in ladies' GS on day 2 of Whistler Cup
Tora Hoshizaki of Edmonton put aside her nerves to win the bronze medal in the women’s U16 giant slalom on Friday at the Mackenzie Investments Whistler Cup alpine skiing competition.

Switzerland's Selina Egloff 1st, Aline Hoepli 2nd in ladies' GS on day 2 of Whistler Cup
Selina Egloff of Switzerland notched her second straight victory in two minutes and 19.35 seconds over two runs. She was the super G winner on Thursday. Her compatriot Aline Hoepli took the silver in 2:20.58 and Hoshizaki followed for the bronze in 2:21.62.
‘’I skied a little bit better in the second run,’’ said Egloff, 15. ‘’The conditions were better in the second run and the snow didn’t give in so much.’’
Even though this was her second career appearance at the Whistler Cup, Hoshizaki was feeling nervous.
‘’After a while I got more comfortable and my racing followed through throughout the day,’’ said Hoshizaki, who skis for Nakiska Alpine Ski Association. ‘’This is a great event to introduce athletes from all over the world and find out where you stand internationally.’’
National U16 champion Alyssa Hill of Calgary was fourth in 2:22.34 and Cassidy Gray of Panorama, B.C., 10th in 2:24.22. OFFICIAL EVENT PHOTOS from Coast Mountain Photography

WHISTLER, BC – Raphael Lessard of Bromont, Que., and WMSC's Nathan Romanin of Squamish, B.C., won silver and bronze in the men’s U16 super-G race on Thursday to open the Mackenzie Investments Whistler Cup alpine skiing competition.
Fredrik Willumsen Haug of Norway took the gold in one minute and 04.24 seconds, followed by Lessard in 1:04.44 and Romanin in 1:04.65.
‘’The course was really soft, especially in the middle, so I really had to ski the bumps in the course,’’ said Haug, 15. ‘’It didn’t feel like a good run but it was fast and I’m really happy.’’
Lessard was competing for the first time at the Mackenzie Investments Whistler Cup.
‘’It feels good to get a strong result,’’ said Lessard, 15. ‘’It was a good run considering it was hard to see. The conditions were challenging but I pulled it through. It was particularly foggy on the last pitch and could not see the ground.’’
Romanin reached the podium despite being the 44th starter. The start of the men’s race was also delayed two hours due to conditions.
‘’I gave it my all and I am pleased,’’ he said. ‘’I was tired because the many delays.’’
In women’s competition, Cassidy Gray of the Panorama Ski Club, missed the podium by a mere 0.01 seconds placing fourth in 1:06.52.
‘’I was a little late going into the last pitch,’’ said Cassidy, 16. ‘’So the last 10 gates I was just trying to make it up, going as straight as I could and in as much of a tuck as I could. The bottom was problematic for many skiers but I was able to hold on.’’
Selina Egloff of Switzerland won the gold medal in 1:06.33 seconds. Ine Haugland of Norway took silver in 1:06.36 and Sofie Sund Malin of Norway was third in 1:06.51.
‘’The course was very fast,’’ said the 15-year-old Ergloff in her first competition overseas. ‘’That is usually not ideal for me but I was able to overcome that.’’

"That's a wrap on 2017, lots of BC athletes on the podium in a successful spring series campaign, but here is one podium pic that is long overdue. The Canadian U19 National Overall champions were awarded yesterday, from the series held in Nakiska in February. Kyle Alexander and Soleil Patterson take home the titles for the men and women! Making BC very proud!" ~ Nick Cooper, BC Ski Team Head Coach
