Canadian Alpine Ski Team member Mike Giannelli suffered an unfortunate setback Monday after injuring his knee at Panorama.
Giannelli, 25, was free skiing following his day of giant slalom training when his left knee buckled on him. Dr. Heard concluded Giannelli most likely suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Dr. Heard elaborated to say the injury was also most likely the result of a prior injury in Pitztal, Austria last October whereby Giannelli suffered a torn meniscus and damage to his ACL. Giannelli, a native of Burnaby, will return home for further evaluation with orthopedic surgeon Dr. Pat McConkey.
This has come as another untimely setback. The super-g specialist not only had knee problems last season but also tore his ACL at the 1999 World Championships in Beaver Creek, Colorado. Giannelli is currently in his fourth year with the men's senior national team.

Fernie's Emily Brydon clutched crutches instead of ski poles at Tuesday's World Cup downhill training runs in Lake Louise. Hiking shoes, not ski boots, were on her feet as she trekked to the finish area where teammates and World Cup friends trained.
Brydon, ranked 19th in the world in downhill, and a double medallist at the 2000 World Junior Alpine Championships, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee two weeks ago training in Colorado, virtually ending her ski season before it even began. Last February, Brydon injured her right knee racing at the World Championships in St. Anton, Aut.
Many racers stopped by after their runs to wish Brydon a speedy recovery from her second knee injury in nine months. Brydon had a message of her own to deliver

“You can't keep a good man down”, General Manager Bruce Goldsmid snapped his achilles tendon while playing squash late last week and had surgery to re-attach the tendon late Tuesday night.
Attempts to keep him at home a little longer failed miserably as he was back in the office Thursday afternoon. His recovery is going seemingly well and while he's hobbling around, he's certainly back to his old self.
