The BC Alpine community was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of long time ski coach Floyd Gniewotta in mid December.
Floyd, who moved to Thailand permanently in 2019 after many visits, had deep roots with coaching ski racing in BC. He started with the Big White Racers – after being hired by head coach Pogo Alford – in the mid 1980s, first with the NGSL youngsters then up to older age groups.
He was with the BWR club from 1987 to 2000. The next season, Floyd moved over to the Apex Ski Club where he was the Head Coach and Program Director for the next 8 years, until 2008.
Floyd was a caring and talented coach who took considerable time to get to know each skier, to work on the details and to introduce the love of skiing and ski racing to each and every young athlete. He was well respected by his coaching peers in all corners of the province.

This will also be a great opportunity for Race Administrators across the province to meet and share with their peers.

Jorgen Anderson, the Apex Ski Club Head Coach, said that after a couple of years of pandemic absence, he’s looking forward to hosting the tradition again.
“It’s like a rite of passage going to these movies. As a skier, and as a little kid, we all went. You would just be so excited because it was as soon as you saw Warren Miller coming out and the movie was coming to your town, that meant that the snow would be close,” he said.
“I think what makes Warren Miller special is he was the first one to do these ski movies.”
The film will be shown on Nov. 10 at Penticton’s Cleland Theatre, with a couple of local businesses set up in the lobby, including neighbourhood brewing.
Apex Mountain Resort GM James Shalman will be the emcee for the evening.
“It was always a part of Apex as a part of the preseason, the build-up to getting excited about the season and now that it’s been absent for a couple of years, I’m hoping that people are excited to get out and be gathered with a bunch of other skiers and people that have the same lifestyle, and old and young,” Anderson added.
Tickets are $20 and are being sold in select stores: ONE Boardshop, Penticton Freeride Boardshop, Neighbourhood Brewing and Ad hoc ahead of the event.
Proceeds from the ticket sales will go towards the Apex Ski Club.
Rally Together (comprised of the Sport Participation and Sport Volunteer Grants) was developed to provide one-time recovery funding for amateur sport organizations that have seen a decrease in membership and volunteerism due to COVID-19. This fund will help B.C.’s amateur sport system continue to provide opportunities for sport development and recovery as well as the significant community and economic benefits. The Rally Together Fund has a total funding envelope of $4M and is supported by the Province of B.C. and administered through viaSport British Columbia.
The $2M Rally Together Sport Participation Grant helps organizations build their participant numbers – to recruit players, athletes and participants of all ages, and to offer more inclusive and accessible program options so that more British Columbians can play. It’s time to rally together through programs and activities that encourage all British Columbians to participate!
