April 11th to 14th, Whistler Blackcomb welcomed U14 and U16 alpine ski racers from around the world for the 27th Whistler Cup. This prestigious event has become the hallmark of the juvenile race calendar. Canada captured the overall title for the first time since 2013.
"It's absolutely fantastic to bring it back for Canada," said the team’s head coach and Alpine Canada’s senior manager of coach education, Jenni Stielow in an interview with Pique News. "The athletes really put their full effort into competition here, which was fantastic. They were very competitive and they paid attention to small-scale details, which I really think paid off in the long run."
Led by Arianne Forget (Prevost, Que./Club de competition Belle Neige-S1 Racing) who captured two individual gold medals in super-G and giant slalom, and silver in slalom, as well as gold in the team event, Canada captured 7 medals in U16 race action.
Alexis Barabe (Ste-Agathe-des-Monts, Que./Club de ski Saint Sauveur) captured silver in the men’s super-G.
Britt Richardson (Canmore, Alta./Calgary Racing Club) was among the multi-medallists at the event, having finished third in the U16 ladies’ giant slalom and slalom races, captured gold in the team event, and finished fourth in the super-G.
“I didn’t have a lot of expectations for myself (coming in) as I just wanted to race the best I can and see how I stack up against the other racers here,” said Richardson on the weekend. “I’m happy with my results over the past few days. There has been some very tight races and some great skiers.”
SUPER G
Arianne Forget (Team Canada) took the gold in one minute, 08.78 seconds followed by Noa Szollos of Israel and Emillie Bakkevig from Oslo, Norway was third in 1:09.71.
In the men’s U16 super-G competition, Alexis Barabe (Team Canada) placed second in the men’s super-G with a time of one minute, 08.63. John Herland of Norway won the gold medal in 1:08.44 seconds and Tollef Jostein Haugen of Norway was third in 1:09.03.
GIANT SLALOM
Arianne Forget was on top of the podium again in the GS with a two-run-time of 2:19.11 with Noa Szollos of Israel placing second, 2:20.81 and Team Canada’s Britt Richardson was third in 2:22.72. Other Canadians in the top ten include Makenna Lebsack, Calgary, Alta., was fourth in 2:23.23 and Cydnie Timmerman of Calgary 8th in 2:24.41.
In the men’s giant slalom, Tollef Jostein Haugen led Norway to a 1-2 finish clocking a two-run-time of 2:17.34. Hermann Fjeldavlie Lindberg, of Lillehammer, Norway was second in 2:18.07 and Manuel Horwitz of Chile was third, 2:18.74.
BC’s Hemming Sola was top Canadian, finishing just off the podium in fourth in 2:19.34.
SLALOM
On the ladies side, two Canadians were on the podium. Britt Richardson captured first-place, Arianne Forget, gold medalist in Super G and GS was second and Emilie Bakkevig from Norway took third-place.
Britt Richardson from Canmore Alberta (Team Canada) led the pack by 0.9 seconds over Team Canada’s Arianne Forget from Prevost, Quebec.
Cyndi Timmerman of Calgary was 6th in 1:32.13 and Penny Robinson of Thunder Bay, Ont., was 7th in 1:32.48.
In the men’s U16 slalom, Tamas Trunk of Hungry was the victor in 1:29.48, Tollef Jostein Haugen of Norway second in 1:30.51 and Nick Kirkwood of US third in 1:31.05.
Mathis Lafond of Bois-des-Fillions, Que., was fifth in 1:31.73, Brady Shears of Edmonton, Alta., sixth in 1:32.66, Aleksas Valadka of Oakville, Ont., seventh in 1:32.76, Ojas Ashok Dhaka of Alberta ninth in 1:33.38 and Matthias Shorter of BC was 10th in 1:33.91.

On behalf of the Whistler Mountain Ski Club and the Whistler Cup Organizing Committee, I would like to welcome the visiting teams, families and volunteers arriving from across Canada and 20 countries. These athletes will compete on Whistler’s Dave Murray Training Centre for the coveted Whistler Cup trophy and a place on the podium that will be located in the Skiers Plaza. You will spot them on the hill, around town, and in a parade wearing their iconic Whistler Cup jackets that they will take home to share Whistler’s name around the globe.
Whistler Cup was the vision of three local alpine ski-racing enthusiasts who believed that Whistler could host a celebrated, international junior racing event just like the prestigious races that are famous in Europe. Fast-forward to this April 11thto 14th, when over 420 athletes and their coaches will journey to Whistler Blackcomb to race and celebrate the 27th running of the Whistler Cup.
Several Whistler Cup winners have gone on to become World Cup, Olympic and Paralympic champions, such as Lindsey Vonn, Marcel Hirscher, Tina Maze, Mikaela Shiffrin, Manuel Osborne-Paradis, Erik Read and Mollie Jepsen. For other young athletes, the Cup provides a single chance to participate in a large, international ski race, enabling them to meet and go on to form lasting relationships through sport.
The Whistler Mountain Ski Club is proud of not only running this marquee event for 27 years, but foralso being an innovator in International Children’s alpine racing. Two years ago, we introduced the first ever Alpine Team Event in international children’s racing and we are excited to include it in the U14 program this year. The race was a huge success, as the athletes, coaches and spectators loved the comradery that head to head racing brought on.
Raven and Ptarmigan will once again be where the Super G, GS and SL events will be held. For those that want to see the potential future speed demons of the world, the Super G on Thurs, April 11 is the place to be. We invite everyone to come out over April 11thto 14th, and watch the action on either the Raven and Ptarmigan runs or on the Upper Dave Murray Downhill run on Whistler Mountain with your flags, cowbells, and enthusiasm to cheer on the athletes for a great race.

WHISTLER, B.C. – Arianne Forget of Provost, Que. and Alexis Barabe of Ste-Agathe-des-Monts, Que. won gold and silver respecively in the women’s and men’s U16 super-G races on Thursday to open the 27th edition of the Whistler Cup. Over 400 athletes, ages 12 to 15, from 20 countries are competing at the renowned international youth ski race, a favourite stop on the race calendar.
Arianne Forget (Team Canada) took the gold in one minute, 08.78 seconds followed by Noa Szollos, who trains in Austria but is representing Israel in 1:09.64 and Emilie Bakkevig from Oslo, Norway was third in 1:09.71.
‘’The course was very technical, which was good for me,’’ said Forget, 15. ‘’I am very proud of myself.’’
Szollos was competing for the third time at the Whistler Cup.
‘’It feels good to get a strong result,’’ said Szollos, 16. ‘’The course was great today and definitely harder than and other Super G I have skied on this year.’’
Emilie Bakkevig from Norway was third.
In the men’s U16 super-G competition, Alexis Barabe of the Saint-Sauveur Ski Club in Quebec placed second in 1:08.63.
‘’It was a good race and very fast,’’ said Barabe. ‘’I was very happy with the result today, I expected to be in the top five, but not to win silver.’’
Johs Herland of Norway won the gold medal in 1:08.44 seconds and Tollef Jostein Haugen of Norway was third in 1:09.03.
‘’The course was very fast with lots of turns,’’ said the 15-year-old Herland in his first competition overseas. ‘’That is usually not ideal for me but I was able to overcome that.’’
Aleksas Valadka (Canada 2) and Chase Burns (BC2), were fifth and eleventh.
Competition continues Friday with the U16 men’s and’s women’s giant slalom, the U14 girls’ slalom and the U14 boys’ dual slalom.

NORTH ZONE FINALS, Smithers, B.C. Hudson Bay Mountain, April 5-7, 2019
Hosted by the Smithers Ski & Snowboard Club (SSSC), the 2019 Teck North Zone Finals welcomed racers and families from Lightning Creek Ski Club, Prince George Ski Club and the Yukon Ski Club to Hudson Bay Mountain (HBM) for an exciting weekend to cap off a great season in the North.
With the early on-set of spring, the SSSC had some concerns leading up to the event, but with the help of Mother Nature, the grooming team at HBM, and a crew of fantastic volunteers, the giant slalom, ski cross, and dual races were a success. Thanks to all for a fantastic season and congratulations to our athletes!
