EVENT SCHEDULE

On behalf of the Whistler Mountain Ski Club and the Whistler Cup Organizing Committee, I would like to welcome the visiting teams, families and volunteers arriving from across Canada and 20 countries. These athletes will compete on Whistler’s Dave Murray Training Centre for the coveted Whistler Cup trophy and a place on the podium that will be located in the Skiers Plaza. You will spot them on the hill, around town, and in a parade wearing their iconic Whistler Cup jackets that they will take home to share Whistler’s name around the globe.

Whistler Cup was the vision of three local alpine ski-racing enthusiasts who believed that Whistler could host a celebrated, international junior racing event just like the prestigious races that are famous in Europe. Fast-forward to this April 11thto 14th, when over 420 athletes and their coaches will journey to Whistler Blackcomb to race and celebrate the 27th running of the Whistler Cup.

Several Whistler Cup winners have gone on to become World Cup, Olympic and Paralympic champions, such as Lindsey Vonn, Marcel Hirscher, Tina Maze, Mikaela Shiffrin, Manuel Osborne-Paradis, Erik Read and Mollie Jepsen. For other young athletes, the Cup provides a single chance to participate in a large, international ski race, enabling them to meet and go on to form lasting relationships through sport.

The Whistler Mountain Ski Club is proud of not only running this marquee event for 27 years, but foralso being an innovator in International Children’s alpine racing. Two years ago, we introduced the first ever Alpine Team Event in international children’s racing and we are excited to include it in the U14 program this year. The race was a huge success, as the athletes, coaches and spectators loved the comradery that head to head racing brought on.

Raven and Ptarmigan will once again be where the Super G, GS and SL events will be held. For those that want to see the potential future speed demons of the world, the Super G on Thurs, April 11 is the place to be. We invite everyone to come out over April 11thto 14th, and watch the action on either the Raven and Ptarmigan runs or on the Upper Dave Murray Downhill run on Whistler Mountain with your flags, cowbells, and enthusiasm to cheer on the athletes for a great race.

Good luck and great racing to all athletes!

Jim McGovern

Annual Sun Peaks HUB International Nancy Greene Festival a hit with families

The 17th Annual HUB International Nancy Greene Festival Hosted by Sun Peaks Alpine Club took place Friday March 22nd & Saturday March 23rd, 2019

Photo from BC Alpine website: www.bcalpine.com"The 2019 running of the annual HUB Festival was the largest yet, with over 675 racers from across the province. Thank you to HUB International and the 110 volunteers each day for making it all possible. These talented volunteers, along with all the support from Sun Peaks Resort were amazing. Nancy Greene and Ken Read skied with the kids, signed helmets and spoke to the parents and athletes at the awards ceremony. The weekend was action-packed with fun, ski racing, skills and team building. Too many highlights to list and the positive feedback from clubs has been overwhelming!" ~ Deanna Devlin, SPAC

"To the parents, guardians, coaches, and family members who took time out of their schedule to attend the 17th annual HUB International Nancy Greene Festival at Sun Peaks Resort this March – THANK YOU", said HUB International's Larry Grant. "This is a wonderful event that HUB International is proud to be a part of. Youth in sport, especially in the ski environment promotes family time together. From driving up to the hill in the morning, riding the chair, warming cold fingers, drinking hot chocolate, or if you’re lucky, spending the night at the hill. These are all moments that we need to embrace with our kids, because in no time at all, they won’t be kids anymore! Thank you to everyone who attended. A heartfelt thank you to Nancy Greene Raine for continually being the ambassador of this sport that she is. This event would not be the same without her. A big thank you also to Ken Read for attending our event and spending time with our youth."

Early spring conditions did not hamper Vernon Ski Club’s Teck OK Zone Finals

Photo from BC Alpine website: www.bcalpine.comPhoto from BC Alpine website: www.bcalpine.comOn the weekend of April 6 & 7 the Vernon Ski Club played host to the 2019 Okanagan Zone Finals at SilverStar Mountain Resort.

With over 160 athletes entered in the competition, the club managed to exceed expectations, given the lack of snow and open runs due to higher than average temperatures over the last couple of weeks.

Athletes aged 9-16 were given a chance to shine in the two-day slalom event. Conditions held up thanks to a couple of the sponsors – Okanagan Fertilizer and of course the groomers from SilverStar Mountain, along with a little bit of the fresh stuff over night.

It was a great weekend for officially wrapping up the 2018/19 Okanagan Zone racing season!
