WHISTLER, BC (April 6, 2014) — Clouds parted and sun beamed on beautiful Whistler Mountain for the final day of competition at the 2014 Whistler Cup, presented by Rio Tinto Alcan.
The U16 women moved to the slalom course and a new leader emerged. Still from the dominant nation of Austria, Nadine Fest of the Gerlitzen Ski Club took top podium position in one minute, 42.43 seconds.
“I’m really surprised and happy right now. I was so nervous waiting for the second run,” said Fest who sat fourth following run one. “My first run wasn’t so good, but I think the second run was the best run I’ve ever had!”
Zanete Gedra from Latvia finished 2nd in both runs to clinch the silver medal with a combined time of 1:42.50, and Austria’s Katrin Hinterholzer earned the bronze in 1:43.23.
With parents and grandparents watching (and gate judging) from the sidelines, a young Maja Nymann from the Mt. Washington Ski Club, and Team BC 1, started 40th and skied her way to an impressive 9th place finish as the fastest Canadian in the race with a two-run time of 1:46.61.
“I am so super excited and happy to get a top-10 at the Whistler Cup,” said Nymann who moved up from 17th after the first run. “At the beginning of the day I didn’t know what my competition looked like and I was shooting for top-30. After a pretty fast first run, my goal became top-10. I just wanted to lay it all on the line and the second run felt really fast and smoother than usual, oh my goodness, this is amazing!”
In the men’s giant slalom competition Sunday, some familiar faces took their places on the podium. From Austria, the winner was Thomas Dorner in 1.48.98, and second place went to Dorner’s Austrian teammate, Manuel Traninger, whose combined time was 1:49.99. Traninger and Dorner were 1st and 2nd respectively in Friday’s super-G, and followed it up with a 1st for Dorner and a 2nd for Traninger in Saturday’s slalom. Today’s 3rd place finisher was Norway’s Odin Vassbotn Breivik whose final time was 1:51.89.
Taking nothing for granted, an overjoyed Dorner called this weekend “a dream come true”.
“Today wasn’t easy, the second run was really difficult, but I’m very happy,” said Dorner. “Whistler is really great, the slopes are nice and very different from Austria. The people here are all friendly and I have made some new friends.”
As in the women’s race, a BC athlete grabbed the top Canadian spot in the men’s GS. Kasper Woolley of the Whistler Mountain Ski Club, and Team BC2, finished 10th with a combined time of 1:52.69. Woolley, whose Mom was on the slip crew and Dad was on the dye crew during his race, couldn’t have been more thrilled to end what he called a “frustrating” season on such a high note.
“I have been faster in time trials than some of the kids ahead of me, but I have not had the best race season,” explained Woolley. “I knew I could do it and I just went for it and pulled it all together today. I’m excited that I put a good result down finally, because I have been pretty frustrated.”
The eighteen U16 men and women from Ontario, Quebec, Alberta and British Columbia who made up Team Canada were not able to defend the Nations’ Cup title, which was clearly won by the Austrian Team athletes who amassed 312 points over three days of racing. Second place went to Norway with 152 points and Canada was third with a total of 86 points.
The Whistler Cup also welcomed U14 athletes from around the world for the 2014 U14 International Festival. Over the three days they raced a dual slalom, a slalom and a giant slalom. In the end, the Japanese team was victorious earning 169.5 points, followed by the Ontario 1 team in second with 133.5 points, and the BC 1 team coming a very close third with 130.5 points. The Dave Murray Award, acknowledging top performances by Canadian males (U14 and U16) at Whistler Cup each year, was presented to the following athletes:

WHISTLER, BC (April 5, 2014) — Mother Nature proved to be a major challenger again Saturday as the U16 racers swapped their speed skis for slalom and giant slalom equipment at the 2014 Whistler Cup. The women were on the GS track while the men took to the slalom course. The first run for both genders ran successfully in the morning, but an afternoon second run in increasing fog and snowfall would tell the tale.
After much work on the track by determined course workers, run-two got underway and the men’s slalom winner was decided. Austrian Thomas Dorner, silver medalist in Friday’s super-G, sat second after the first run and moved into first position to take the victory in one minute, 36.91 seconds.
“Though I made a few mistakes, the first run was nice, it was set by my trainer [coach],” said Dorner. “I tried to go faster in my second run, but it was really hard to drive the course because you couldn’t see anything through the fog, you had to just remember it. Of course I’m really happy with how it turned out.”
Austria’s Manuel Traninger, super-G winner from the previous day, gave up top spot to his teammate Saturday, and happily accepted second place with a combined time of 1:37.76. Latvian skier Zaks Gedra joined the Austrians on the podium in third with a time of 1:38.70
Team Canada’s Max Kirshenblatt of the Whistler Mountain Ski Club, who earned bronze in super-G the day before, had set himself up for a great slalom finish by winning the first run, but unfortunately was not able to complete his second run.
The top Canadian male in Saturday’s slalom was not from Team Canada, but in fact from Team Ontario. Cameron Dymond of Oakville, and the Osler Bluff Ski Club, wearing bib 41 and sitting 17th after run-one, had a ripper of a second run to pull off a 6th place overall finish to end the day.
“The course was quite bumpy and you had to fight the whole way down,” explained 15-year-old Dymond. “I skied smart in sections and aggressive in other sections. My goal was to come in the top three in the second run and I came third, so I’m satisfied.”
On the women’s side visibility and conditions improved after a short delay, and an ecstatic Viktoria Habersatter of Austria, wearing lucky bib #1, collapsed in a heap of joy when she crossed the finish and realized her accomplishment. For the second day in a row she was at the top, having won both runs and grabbed the U16 giant slalom victory by over a second in 1:54.26.
“Honestly I can’t believe it, I am so happy and I have no words for this,” Habersatter told us. “In the first run I crashed hard at the last gate and really hurt my hand and back; I have a bruise and it hurts.” In spite of feeling “pain in the start, and for a couple of gates in the second run,” Habersatter’s mental fortitude took over allowing her to post the fastest second-run time and win the race.
Rounding out the women’s podium were Austria’s Katrin Hinterholzer and Norway’s Josefine Selvaag, finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively.
Beatrix Lever of Montreal and the Mont Cascade Ski Club once again earned top Canadian honours with an 8th place finish in 2:00.10.
“I made a little mistake in my first run, but overall it was a good performance and I’m happy with it,” said Lever. “Between runs I tried to stay relaxed, and surrounding myself with friends always helps with that. The track was a little softer in the afternoon, but I thought it was good and I’m very proud of all my teammates today.”
Competition continues Sunday with men’s giant slalom and ladies’ slalom.

WHISTLER, BC (April 4, 2014) — Whistler Blackcomb and the Whistler Mountain Ski Club are proud to welcome over 400 athletes ages 12 to 15, 150 coaches and 300 volunteers to the 22ndrunning of the Whistler Cup, presented by Rio Tinto Alcan. For the U16 athletes, men’s and women’s super-G competition kicked off the 3-day event Friday under a mix of conditions ranging from snow and fog, to sunny skies.
In the women’s race it was 15-year-old Viktoria Habersatter of Austria who took the win in one minute, 6.13 seconds. Habersatter, who lives near Saltzberg in Austria, is competing at her first-ever Whistler Cup and is loving her first visit to the resort.
“The course was so great today,” said Habersatter, who skis for the Radstadt Ski Club. “It was very fast, but for me it was the perfect run; a bit soft and a little foggy, but really, really good. I did hope to win, but I can’t believe it at the same time!”
Two young ladies from Norway rounded out the super-G podium, with Kajsa Vickhoff Lie, wearing bib 29, skiing into second position in 1:06.25, and Josefine Selvaag finishing third in 1:06.34.
The top Canadian in Friday’s race was another 15-year-old skier, Beatrix Lever from Montreal and the Mont Cascade Ski Club who finished in fourth position, missing the podium by a mere hundredth of a second, stopping the clock at 1:06.35. Lever, also in Whistler for her first time, spent the winter training at Whiteface Mountain in New York State and took part in the 4-day Team Canada training camp in Whistler in preparation for these races.
“The Team Canada camp was fun and it gave me a chance to see how I compare to other girls in the country,” said Lever. “I thought today’s course was really good, but I feel like I held back a little and could have done better. I was happy to qualify at the Can-Am’s to represent Canada here in Whistler, and my plan for tomorrow is to really just go for it, give it all I have and leave nothing on the hill.”
Fog continued to roll in and out during the men’s super-G, causing a few delays in the race, but in the end it was another Austrian racer, Manuel Traninger, who rose to the top finishing first in 1:03.94. Traninger, 15, hails from Schladming, an Austrian town famous for hosting World Cup races, and he too is experiencing Whistler Cup for the first time.
“My run was mostly good, but not great in the middle section,” said Traninger following his victory. “It was a little snowy during the race, but I’m happy to be in Whistler and very happy with this result. I’m looking forward to the giant slalom, which is my favourite discipline.”
Second spot was reserved for Traninger’s teammate Thomas Dorner, also of Austria, who completed the race in 1:04.30.
The highlight for Team Canada was a spectacular third place finish by hometown racer Max Kirshenblatt of Tsawwassen and the Whistler Mountain Ski Club who was 6th out of the gate and waited anxiously in the finish area to see if his time of 1:04.47 would be good enough for a trip to the podium.
“I’m feeling pretty happy with my result, but I don’t think I skied to my potential,” said Kirshenblatt. “My goal is always to ski my best, stay humble and just let it happen. I saw my mom in the start – she’s the start referee – I smiled at her, she gave me a wink and off I went. The weather was coming in and out and the volunteers and slippers have been doing a great job of keeping the course in good condition for everyone. My plan for tomorrow is to go back and get my slalom skis prepared, enjoy the parade, meet some new friends and get some rest.”
