Crews battle Mother Nature for successful Keurig night slalom at Kimberley
KEURIG Cup – Night Slalom
Hosted by Kimberley Alpine Team at Kimberley Alpine Resort
3/6/14
A number of national and provincial team athletes raced at Kimberley Alpine Resort in the highly anticipated Night Slalom, Thursday March 6th, 2014. Soft snow and rain throughout the day would not stand in the way and the race got underway at 4:30 P.M. under the lights on the "Main" run.
The women's podium was dominated by Alberta girls, with Mia Henry (Alberta Ski Team) finishing 1st in a combined time of one minute, 40.31 seconds, followed by teammate Hannah Melinchuk (1:40.71) and CARC racer Georgia Willinger (1:42.08). Windermere Valley Ski Club's Courtney Hoffos was the top BC finisher coming in 5th overall, and Alix Wells (BC Ski Team/Prince George Ski Club) won the second run to move from 14th to 6th position overall.
“Today's night slalom was a lot of fun, but very strange weather combined with a great slalom slope, soft wet snow, and a bit of rain, guaranteed good action”, said women’s BC Team coach JP Daigneault. “In the first run, Alix Wells skied great until she fell at the top of the last pitch. It was a bummer because she has really started to figure out her slalom skiing lately. Fortunately, in run 2 she was running 2nd and won that run taking advantage of a smoother track on a course that our head coach, Johnny Crichton, and I had set. I'm happy she finally showed herself how fast she can be just by skiing normally; nothing extra, just good, basic, solid, normal skiing. As for Emma [King] and Charley [Field] they showed good grit, but had a tough time of it tonight. I look forward to seeing them in tomorrow's super-G.”
The men competed in a stacked field with a number of Canadian Alpine Ski Team members in attendance. Erik Read (CAST) took top spot in 1:31.24, followed by Paul Stutz (former CAST) in 2nd place (1:31.49) and Tyler Werry (CAST invitee/BCST/Fernie Alpine Ski Team) in 3rd (1:31.76). BC Ski Team boys Brodie Seger, Martin Grasic and Blake Ramsden represented their team with strong finishes, taking 7th, 8th and 9th positions respectively.
