BC Ski Team girls grab 1 throuh 4 in GS; the guys are 1 and 2!

Canadians dominate Sport Chek U16 Can-Am Western Championships

PANORAMA, B.C. (March 5, 2013) — Canada’s best up-and-coming young ski racers owned the podium at the Sport Chek U16 Can-Am Western Championships during four days of competition in Panorama, B.C.

Riley Seger, a member of the Whistler Mountain Ski Club, was crowned men’s overall champion and Georgia Willinger, of Kananaskis Alpine Ski Club, and Haley McKercher, from Sunshine Ski Club, tied for the ladies’ overall title.

With racers from Canada and the United States vying for top spot on the podium in giant slalom, slalom, super-G and ski cross races, the Canadian contingent came out on top, sweeping the podium in all four events in both men’s and ladies’ categories.

Seger took the men’s giant slalom and super-G championships as well as the men’s overall title. The 16-year-old was 16^th-place in slalom, and finished with 215 points. In hot pursuit of Seger was Keegan Sharp, 16, of Team Panorama, who took silver in giant slalom and super-G and was less than a second away from first place in both races. Sharp finished second overall with 160 points. Third place overall went to Max Scharf, 16, of the Revelstoke Ski Club, who finished with 132 points after winning men’s slalom.

A heated race for the overall ladies’ title ended in a tie between Willinger and McKercher, who earned 160 points each.

Willinger, 16, won the ladies’ super-G, was sixth in the giant slalom, and finished 13^th in slalom, while McKercher, 16, took second place in super-G and giant slalom. McKercher’s strong results in super-G and giant slalom secured her the shared overall title despite not finishing her slalom run. Tyra Collombin, 16, of the Fernie Alpine Ski Team, earned third place overall and won the ladies’ slalom, finishing with 151 points.

Skiers competed in all four events at the Sport Chek U16 Can-Am Western Championships, but only the giant slalom, slalom and super-G races counted towards the overall men’s and ladies’ titles.

“I think the Sport Chek U16 Can-Am Championships are important because U16 is an age where we see girls become women and boys become men,” said Nigel Cooper, manager of athlete development with Alpine Canada. “We get to see a little more swagger in their skiing and their skill levels really increase. It’s a great transitional race and a good opportunity to get a taste of the next level of racing.”

The show of talent at the Panorama-based Can-Am races was impressive, Cooper said.

“Arguably we saw some World Cup turns this weekend. Not every turn and not from every kid, but I think the front of the pack is very strong.”

Preparations for the Sport Chek U16 Can-Am Western Championships were affected when an early-morning fire on Feb. 28 tore through the top floor of a condominium building at Panorama Mountain Village where some racers and organizers were staying.

Occupants of the 1000 Peaks building were forced to evacuate at 1 a.m. Firefighters responded and extinguished the fire, but not before equipment belonging to some out-of-town racers was destroyed. Edmonton’s Rabbit Hill Ski Club elected to leave the championship before it began. Other ski clubs lost equipment in the blaze, prompting other participating clubs to band together and find borrowed equipment for the skiers.

“The actual running of the event was basically unaffected, but obviously the fire greatly affected some of the racers,” Cooper said. “It was a great show of sportsmanship to see other clubs rally together to help. When things like that happen, you hope to see the best in people, and we definitely did. There was a lot of generosity shown from everyone involved.”

The success of the event was attributed to its hardworking volunteers and sponsors.

“A special thanks to Panorama, Sport Chek, Cresa, and everyone who helped create four great days of racing,” said Philippe Bernier, director of events with Alpine Canada.

URGENT CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS, Panorama Spring Series, March 30 – Apr 4

We're asking for your help because there are still not enough volunteers to run this event!

It’s a well-known fact that the Windermere Valley Ski Club and Panorama Mountain Village run first class events.  It’s also true that they offer great value to their volunteers, providing free shared accommodation, breakfast and lunch every day, and of course some of the best après-ski fun around!

The ROC of this year's Spring Series at Panorama (March 30 to April 4) is asking for your help!  There are volunteer positions available in just about every role – big and small – on and off the hill. 

If you have some time and would like to experience high level ski racing among friends in a spectacular setting – while working on your spring tan – please contact Gordon Bagan at gordon@bagan.ca
