BC Open Ski Cross Championships to take place at Big White Ski Resort

Big White Racers Ski Club, in partnership with Big White Ski Resort, is excited to present the BC Ski Cross Championships.

Join racers from BC, Alberta and Washington State as they compete in Big White’s Telus Park on a race course designed by our resident expert, Flynn Seddon with the support of the Big White Events Team and Telus Park Crew.

This is a great opportunity to learn a lot more about Ski Cross and support further development of Ski Cross in BC. The Ski Cross race will be held on Saturday, Feb. 23 (single, timed qualification runs) and Sunday Feb. 24th (heats of 4’s by age groups).

We have a great, fun event planned! The weekend will include a BBQ lunch at the base of Telus Park on both days. The Sunday awards presentation will have our very own Ian Deans (Alpine Canada Ski Cross team Prospect) presenting medals (sponsored by Telus). What else does a race be at Big White Ski Resort always include? Amazing prizes, including a pair of race skis and bindings!

We are fortunate to have Lyle Skaien (Fernie Ski Club) as our race TD who will also be offering a Level One Ski Cross Officials Training course on Thurs., Feb. 21 at 6:30 p.m. at Big White Ski Resort (location to be announced).

Swette Secures First Career Nor-Am Giant Slalom Victory in Vail, Colorado

FLASH QUOTE: Ford Swette of North Vancouver (BC Ski Team/ACA Prospect Group/Whistler Mountain Ski Club):
“It’s been an interesting week and I’m so happy right now.  Since I didn’t train with the rest of the team in Italy last month, I had something to prove to myself when I got here for the Nor-Am races.  I was nervous that maybe I had fallen behind while everyone else was getting amazing training in Europe.  My confidence has been restored and I now believe that the break was actually a benefit to me and gave me time to focus on what I need to do to be successful.  I feel very strong right now and this win is just another positive step forward. We race slalom tomorrow, which is great because I’ve been enjoying slalom maybe even more than GS."

Men’s Nor-Am Finals ROC puts call out for VOLUNTEERS at Nakiska & COP

The Men's Nor-Am Finals will be held in mid-March!

The current schedule calls for the Nakiska races (GS, super-G) to run from March 12 to 15, and the slalom races are to be held at COP on the weekend of March 16 and 17. Further information can be found at http://www.alpinecanada.org/events/2013/audi-coupe-nor-am-cup-nakiskacop

We are looking for volunteers to help with this year's races, and with setup at both venues before the races. We offer all meals, shared accommodation at The Delta, Kananaskis, as well as post-race socializing and volunteer appreciation gifts for those who are able to work multiple days.

We are in need of people to fill many of the positions, including course workers, timing, dye crew, gate judges, video control, bib collectors…etc.

If you are able to help out in any capacity, whether it is for the entire week or just for a few days, we would love to see you come out. It is a great opportunity to catch up with old friends, have an "all expenses paid week" in the mountains and to watch the top male skiers in North America vie for the men's NorAm overall championships.

If you are available and would like to help, please sign up with Alpine Canada at http://www.alpinecanada.org/forms/volunteer

If you have any questions please contact Barb Wood at skiracevolunteer@shaw.ca. Please feel free to forward this to anyone else you think might be interested in helping out.
