Alpine Canada announces the team representing Canada at the 2017 Junior World Alpine Skiing Championships in Åre (SWE).

For the first time in over 30 years, Åre (SWE) will be hosting the best junior athletes in the world, including eight Canadian men and six ladies, vying for the title of World Junior Champion. The event kicks off on March 6th with downhill training and concludes on March 14th with the men’s slalom.

The 2017 Canadian team is comprised of athletes between the ages of 16 and 21 including 2016 Downhill World Junior Champion Valérie Grenier, and 2016 silver medalist, Jack Crawford. Additional development team and identified provincial athletes will be rounding out the team heading to Åre.

“This is a very important event in the development of these athletes and I am excited to see Sweden hosting the event,” said Alpine Canada’s Sport Domestic Director, Dusan Grasic. “Åre is a regular stop on the World Cup circuit and will host the 2019 World Championships. It is a demanding hill, steep and varied terrain and will provide a challenge to all disciplines. I am confident however that the team selected has podium potential and the coaches on the ground will ensure the best possible environment for all.”

The team will be departing for Sweden, February 27th and complete a four day training block, before heading to Åre for DH training on March 6th, to defend their best ever (3rd-place overall, in 2016) finish at a Junior World Championships.

BC Alpine congratulates Antonia Wearmouth (Grouse Tyee) and Cameron Alexander (WMSC) on being named to the 2017 World Juniors Team Canada!

FLASH QUOTES:
Antonia Wearmouth: "After a lot of setbacks in preseason training this year I am really happy to be able to fulfill my goal of going to world junior championships this March in Are, Sweden. My skiing feels like it is really coming together right now so I'm excited to see what I can do!"

Cameron Alexander: "I'm super excited for the chance to be able to go to world juniors in Åre Sweden.  It was one of my main goals this year and I can't wait to take advantage of this opportunity and ski as fast as I can.  Åre sounds like a pretty cool place and it should be a great experience to race there."

Nick Cooper (Head Coach): "I'm very happy for both these athletes. They have worked really hard to get to this point and it will be a great opportunity for them to compete at the highest level of Junior racing. I know they both go in hungry to show the world what they can do."

Maja Woolley, Christian Callaghan win 2017 Enquist Slalom Trophies

Classic slalom race on Mt. Seymour thrills athletes and spectators

Christian Callaghan (Grouse Tyee Ski Club) and Maja Woolley (Whistler Mountain Ski Club), were the individual recipients of the Enquist Slalom Trophies at this weekend’s alpine slalom races on Mt. Seymour in North Vancouver.

Steeped in annual tradition since 1936, the two-day event was the 81’st anniversary of this classic Slalom race.  Hosted by Mount Seymour Ski Club, the competition featured two slalom races (one on Saturday and one on Sunday) for young men and women aged 14-17, as well as a few Masters racers.

Lined with snow-draped pines and shrouded in intermittent fog on Saturday and in glorious sunshine in Sunday, the spectacularly picturesque “Unicorn” run presented itself with the thrills and challenges that racers, organizers, volunteers and spectators have become accustomed to over many years of Mt. Seymour ski racing history.  Roused by the hunt for the prestigious Enquist trophies, the young alpine racers put on a breathtaking show of skills and athleticism.

Other athletes on the podium in the U16 category included… for the men… Whistler’s Tait Jordan (Gold on Saturday), and Kieran Harley (Silver on Saturday and Gold on Sunday), as well as Grouse Tyee’s Keaton Chiu (Silver on Sunday) and Brendan Flynn (Bronze both Saturday and Sunday).   For the women, it was Whistler’s Maja Woolley (Gold both Saturday and Sunday),  Grouse Tyee’s Ksenija Kaludjecic, (Bronze on Saturday, Silver on Sunday), as well as Whistler’s Alexandra Chartrand (Silver on Saturday) and Una Brudar (Bronze on Sunday).

Retrired World Cup Slalom Ace, and former Enquist Slalom winner (1998) Michael Janyk presented awards at the post-race ceremonies.

Rio Tinto NGSL Coast Zone Skills Event hosted by Mount Seymour Ski Club

Photo from BC Alpine website: www.bcalpine.com

It’s a busy couple of weeks for the Mount Seymour Ski Club hosting back-to-back races with the NGSL Coast Zone U8/U10 Skills Event on Sunday, February 5th and the Enquist TECK SL on February 11th and 12th.

It was touch and go on Sunday with the forecast calling for 30+ cm on the day leading up and 34cm the night before, but the club was able to endure and run a successful event.  Almost 200 U8 and U10 racers compromised of the Cypress Ski Club, Grouse Mountain Tyee Ski Club, Helmock Ski Club and the Mount Seymour Ski Club competed against each other in a Dual Glalom, tested their speed skills in the speed trap, and learned how to fly on the jump. Overcoming the snow that Mother Nature graced the West Coast Mountains with this past week, the event was a great success uniting the clubs together and creating friendships amongst athletes.

Photo from BC Alpine website: www.bcalpine.com

Howard Louie the Mount Seymour Ski Club President and Craig Chen grilled up over 200 hot dogs for all the racers. Volunteers came together to put on this great event and help make it an unforgettable day for the racers. The day would not have been a success without all the volunteers, coaches and support of the Mount Seymour Ski Resort.

A big thank you has to go out to the Mount Seymour Ski Resort for providing us support for the event and working with the Mount Seymour Ski Club. They continue year after year to support the Mount Seymour Ski club and Alpine Racing.
