BC Ski Team member Stefanie Fleckenstein (WMSC) finishes third overall for the season in the Nor-Am Cup alpine combined discipline, just 1 point back of silver medalist Nina O’Brien from the US Ski Team. USST member and World Cup veteran Megan McJames won the season-long series. Fleckenstein was second to O’Brien in the U21 category. “Its been an exciting year, racing Nor-Ams this year, starting in Jackson and Copper Mountain, before moving to Panorama and then back east to Quebec and Lake Placid," said Fleckenstein. “I’m really happy with my alpine combined and super-G results. Ryan, Nick and PL (Jazic, Cooper and Dumoulin) have been great this year getting me ready for these races, and I also would like to thank the BC Team sponsors who made attending all of these races possible.”  Fleckenstein currently sits 9th in the overall with 2 more tech races to go in Vail Colorado Mar 17th and 18th.

CAST member Jack Crawford (WMSC) finished 2nd in the Alpine Combined to USST’s Erik Arvidsson, with University of Denver’s Erik Read in 3rd in a tight series. Only 15 points separated the podium.

CAST veteran Candice Crawford finished 3rd in the SG discipline, with McJames finishing 2nd and USST member Anna Marno taking the crown. Fleckenstein finished 5th overall in SG, and was 2nd U21 behind USST’s Breezy Johnson in 4th.

Jack Crawford matched sister Candice’s SG result, in 3rd, with CAST teammate Tyler Werry finishing second and Arvidsson taking that title as well to go with his World Junior DH crown. Crawford noted “I’m pleased with the result in my 2nd year racing on the NorAm circuit. I’m disappointed that we didn’t get to race today, but the season series has been fun. I’m now going to shift my focus to the remaining GS and SL races before heading up to Whistler for the Canadian Championships next week.”

Breezy Johnson took the Downhill crown by 10pts over CAST’s Valerie Grenier, the current World Junior DH champion. USST’s Cecily Decker captured the final podium spot.

The final speed series races were contested on the famed Aspen DH track, site of the 2017 World Cup finals. The warm trend that has been prevalent at some many races this year continued at Aspen, and the course was challenging for both DH and SG. Tuesday’s final SG was cancelled after an overnight snowfall left the track un-race-able. The series now switches to tech events with the ladies racing 1 GS and 2 SL at Vail and the men finishing their NorAm season at Aspen. The current overall NorAm standings, including all disciplines, has Megan McJames in 1st with Canada’s Valerie Grenier and Candice Crawford in 2nd and 3rd. On the men’s side, CAST’s Erik Read leads teammate Jack Crawford with Erik Arvidsson in 3rd.

The Fernie Alpine Ski Team successfully hosted the third and final event of the Western Ski Cross series at Fernie Alpine Resort, March 11 – 13. Following competitions at Big White and Lake Louise, this season finale saw athletes travelling from as far away as Whistler, Smithers, Edmonton and Calgary. Some athletes chose to attend all three race weekends throughout the season, while others competed only when the event was near their home hill. Over 85 competitors from U12 to U18, ten teams in all, attended the three days of training and racing in Fernie.

Thank you Fernie parent Jim Hall for the stunning photos that capture all the breathtaking action out on the course! You can enjoy them HERE

David Hawkins, Chief of Race, noted that “this was the only race in the series that followed the true ski cross format. It made for a very exciting race, with the kids being able to see how a true ski cross runs. Time trials to determine seeding for the races, and the elimination ladders, made for very competitive racing.”

Rod Timm, Chief of Course, built a challenging and exciting course with fun features. The racers will be talking about the Wutang for a long time to come!

Dylan Timm, a U14 racer said "the western ski-cross races this year were lots of fun. I met lots of new people and made lots of friends. I really enjoyed the big features, and that, with the three other people running them at the same time made it challenging (in a good way).”

ACA Canadian Ski Racing Awards; BC Volunteer, Coach & Athletes honoured!

Monday, March 14, 2016
2016 CANADIAN SKI RACING AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED
Image: 2016 CANADIAN SKI RACING AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED

Calgary, Alta. (March 14, 2016) – This year, Alpine Canada Alpin (ACA) reinstated a national awards program with a fresh new lens, to recognize impassioned members of the ski racing community, along with its athletes, for their extraordinary contributions and success in ski racing. Today, ACA announced the winners of the 2016 Canadian Ski Racing Awards, presented by Helly Hansen.

The 2016 Canadian Ski Racing Awards recognize Canada’s top athletes in alpine, para-alpine and ski cross racing, as well as deserving coaches and volunteers who have shown outstanding dedication and commitment to the sport. Over 20,000 Canadians participated in voting for their favourite athletes, at www.acaawards.org.

“The ACA Awards are an important initiative for Canadian ski racing, giving recognition to the lifeblood of our sport.  Athletes, volunteers, coaches and builders deserve to be acknowledged for their tireless dedication to ski racing,” said Mark Rubinstein, CEO and President of Alpine Canada Alpin. “We are overwhelmed by the number of nominations and votes we received. It’s an honour to recognize several individuals that have given so much to our sport. Congratulations to all the nominees and this year’s winners.”

The independent Awards Committee, chaired by former World Cup champion Emily Brydon (B.C), selected the winners based on specific criteria developed prior to the launch of the awards. Other committee members include ACA alumni Kelly Vanderbeek (Alta.) and Julien Cousineau (Que.), along with Shannon Sullivan (Ont.), Joanna Magee (Alta.) and Gordie Bowles (B.C.).

"It was an exciting and inspiring inaugural year for the Canadian Ski Racing Awards. There were a lot of fantastic nominations and applications across all categories, which all deserve merit and recognition,” said Brydon of the engagement from the ski racing community. “The volunteers are the backbone of the sport we love so much and the coaches empower athletes to develop, grow and achieve amazing accomplishments throughout their careers. The stories of our athletes inspire and educate us on the power of sport and achieving our goals and dreams; excellence is very apparent. On behalf of the committee, I would like to congratulate all winners, nominees and applicants – there were a lot of tough decisions but we are extremely proud of the winners selected.”

This year’s Canadian Ski Racing Awards, presented by Helly Hansen, recognize the following individuals for their passion, dedication and contributions to ski racing in Canada:

Volunteer of the Year: Jennifer Voss, Hemlock Valley, BC

Jennifer Voss is a highly dedicated volunteer at the club level, volunteering for countless U16 races, and taking on everything from gate judging, hand timing, race office duties and everything in between. In addition to this, Voss also made time to be the Race Administrator for the Whistler Cup speed events and help train and mentor the Race Administrator for the 2016 BC Winter Games. Jenn has been courageously battling pancreatic cancer since September 2014 and continues to be an inspiration to many in the BC ski racing community!

Male Coach of the Year: Francis Royal, Quebec City, Que.

Francis Royal was selected based on his determination and perseverance as a coach. His passion for ski racing constantly pushes athletes to improve. He is a mentor and coach to all his athletes and exemplifies the standard in coaching excellence.

Female Coach of the Year: Danielle Robson, Whistler, BC

Based out of Whistler, BC, Robson raced at the provincial and Nor-Am level before shifting her focus to coaching. Robson’s calm demeanour and ability to create a fun and focused team environment has been shared at all levels of ski racing.

Male Alpine Athlete of the Year: Trevor Philp, Calgary, Alta.

Trevor Philp exemplifies an athlete that has showed continued improvement and promise throughout his career on the Canadian Alpine Ski Team. This season, Philp has achieved several career accomplishments, qualifying for second runs in giant slalom, slalom and alpine combined races. Philp achieved a career-best 14th-place finish in the Kitzbühel slalom in January.

Female Alpine Athlete of the Year: Larisa Yurkiw, Owen Sound, Ont.

Larisa Yurkiw of Team Larisa has been crowned Canada’s speed queen this season, landing on the podium a total of three times so far, including two second-place finishes and a third-place finish. Yurkiw’s success on the circuit has put her in second-place in the overall downhill FIS World Cup rankings, sitting just behind famed U.S. skier and 2016 champion, Lindsey Vonn.

Male Para Alpine Athlete of the Year: Mac Marcoux (Guide: BJ Marcoux), Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.

This dynamic sibling duo made a splash last year on the IPC World Cup circuit and continued to prove their dominance again this year securing the Crystal Globe in both downhill and super G disciplines. Guided by brother BJ Marcoux, Mac landed on the podium a total of nine times this season.

Female Para Alpine Athlete of the Year: Alana Ramsay, Calgary, Alta.

Alana Ramsay’s breakout season was culminated by seven podium-finishes across slalom, giant slalom and super G races. This season was the first time Ramsay landed on the World Cup podium, showing consistency race after race, and ending the season ranked third overall in the standing category.

Male Ski Cross Athlete of the Year: Christopher Del Bosco, Montreal, Que.

Veteran ski cross athlete, Chris Del Bosco, proved experience can be the key to success, ending the season with a handful of podiums and trophies to add to his collection. Del Bosco had a total of five podium finishes, finishing second overall in the World Cup ski cross rankings and returned to the podium at the X Games, finishing in third-place.

Female Ski Cross Athlete of the Year: Marielle Thompson, Whistler, BC

Olympic gold medalist, Marielle Thompson, returned back to the 2015-16 season after an injury last year and picked up right where she left off, capturing four first-place finishes and a total of six podiums. Thompson ended the season ranked in the number two spot overall for female athletes on the World Cup ski cross tour.

Minogue Award of Excellence: Jack Crawford, Toronto, Ont. (and the Whistler Mountain Ski Club)

Canadian Development Team athlete, Jack (James) Crawford will receive the $10,000 grant for winning the Minogue Award of Excellence for his achievement as a development athlete. Crawford’s performance in the Nor-Am races and at this year’s FIS Junior World Ski Championships highlight his promise as a force to be reckoned with on the World Cup circuit in years to come. Crawford secured a silver medal at the Junior World Championships in the super G race and countless podium-finishes on the Nor-Am circuit across all disciplines.

Builder Award: Eddie Creed

The Builder Award is extended to the late Eddie Creed (1921-2015) for his esteemed accomplishments and contributions to ski racing in Canada. Creed’s philanthropic endeavours and investment in the Nancy Green Ski League, along with this dedication to the ski community, make him a legacy in our community. Eddie was the Chairman of the Board for Alpine Canada from 1968 through the 1971 season, significantly strengthening the organization under his stewardship. ACA bestows this award to Creed for his contributions to our program over the years, helping to build the organization to the success it is today.

Honourable mentions in the Builder Cateogry go to Jurg Gfeller and Christopher Edgell.

To view the criteria for each category, please visit the National Awards Guide here.  Fan voting and nominations contributed to one portion of the overall criteria.

Award recipients will be honoured at the 2016 Sport Chek Canadian Championships on Saturday, March 26, 2016 in Whistler, B.C. Thank you to everyone who nominated, voted and contributed to this year’s award process. We are thankful to have such an engaged and supportive community of fans and stakeholders championing our sport.

Home from Sochi with great results, a ton of experience & good memories

Image: CANADIAN ALPINE NEXT GENERATION SKIERS ACHIEVE MULTI-PODIUM SUCCESS AT WORLD JUNIOR SKI CHAMPIONSHIPS
The FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships have come to a close with Canadians landing on the podium in multiple events. This year’s competition took place in Sochi, Russia where the course workers battled unseasonably warm temperatures and the athletes raced in fog, wet snow, ice and changing track conditions.

Despite the challenging conditions, Canada achieved a third-place overall nations ranking in the Marc Hodler Cup, led by performances from Canadian athletes Valérie Grenier and Jack Crawford.

Grenier kicked off the series by making history with a victory in the ladies’ downhill race, as the first Canadian female to win the coveted downhill title. Grenier’s podium streak continued with a silver medal in the super G race.

Canadian Alpine Development Team athlete, Jack Crawford, also stood on the podium in the super G bringing home a silver medal in a competitive men’s field. Crawford’s silver is Canada’s first men’s podium at the World Junior Championships since Philip Brown took home bronze in 2011.

The Canadian athletes missed out on a podium finish in the technical disciplines, however they scored top ten finishes despite difficult race conditions. Crawford finished the slalom in a very respectable fifth-place, the top North American finish of the day, while Development Team athlete Ali Nullmeyer finished tenth.

In the giant slalom event, Grenier finished in seventh-place making her the top North American racer in the women’s race.  Both Crawford and Development Team athlete, Brodie Seger, cracked the top ten, finishing fifth and eighth respectively.

Grenier, Crawford, Nullmeyer and Jeffrey Read made up Team Canada for the Team Event. Canada was eliminated in the second round by a photo finish against Norway, finishing the event in seventh-place.

Ali Nullmeyer attended the World Junior Championships coming off a silver medal performance in the slalom at the Youth Olympic Games in Norway.

“I think we had a fantastic championship with three medals,” said Dusan Grasic, Director of Domestic Sport, Alpine Canada Alpin. “The athletes dug deep and secured some great top-ten finishes. We are really happy to leave Sochi with a third-place overall ranking.”

A total of 80 racers participated in the event from the Cypress, Grouse, Mount Seymour and Hemlock Ski Teams.

Photo from BC Alpine website: www.bcalpine.com

Both a 'glalom' course and an obstacle course (with a couple of 360 degree turns to teach the young racers how to hike around a gate) were set up for the athletes to test their skills. Both courses were timed and medals given out for each event.

Photo from BC Alpine website: www.bcalpine.com

Over 200 people were in attendance for the awards ceremony, which was held in the Hemlock day lodge – out of the blustery and dramatic weather. It was loads of fun for all!
