Huge congratulations to Ryan Moffat of the Okanagan Zone Team and Big White Racers for qualifying for the Youth Olympic Games after the Alpine Insurance Tech series this week!
Moffatt put together a pair of solid performances in the slalom and giant slalom events, placing second and third to secure one of the four spots available on Team Canada. Rounding out Canada’s alpine team are Justin Alkier and Ali Nullmeyer from Ontario and Invermere's Amelia Smart, formerly of Vernon.
Chilliwack's Reece Howden trains with the Okanagan Ski Team. He'll compete in ski cross events. Howden nailed down one of just two spots — one male and one female — on the Canadian ski cross team. Kimberley’s Zoe Chore will also represent her country.
Catherine Martin of Kelowna, the Okanagan Alpine zone chair, said having four of the six Team Canada members from B.C. was "very exciting."
“But having two of the four from the Okanagan Ski Team is an even greater accomplishment, and it speaks volumes as to the athletes’ work ethic, dedication and determination. We are very proud of them and their coach Derek Trussler.”
Martin noted that the Youth Olympic Games will give the teenage athletes the opportunity to learn about high-performance sport and meet Olympic champions and role models from around the world.
These promising young athletes from all over the world will gather in the Norwegian town of Lillehammer from February 12 to 21, 2016 for the second edition of the Winter Youth Olympic Games.
The fairy tale scenery of Norway’s Oppland region will provide the backdrop for fantastic feats on the snow and ice at the Winter Youth Olympic Games Lillehammer 2016.

Our U16 Rising Stars camp wrapped up Sunday at Sun Peaks Resort. The coaches would really like to thank the athletes who gave it their all for 4 days of team building.

BCST's Stefanie Fleckenstein top Junior at Panorama Nor-Am Super-G – Merryweather 2nd (USA), Breezy 3rd (USA)
Panorama Mountain Village (December 12 & 13, 2015) – Nor-Am racing moved to Panorama with men's and women's super-G and alpine combined (SG time combined with a one-run slalom race). Men's racing was on the schedule Saturday and the BC Team was represented by WMSC’s Riley Seger, Cameron Alexander and Max Peiffer, as well as Grouse Tyee’s Sam Mulligan and Revelstoke's Dominic Unterberger. Max Kirshenblatt (WMSC) did not start as he is resting up after a nasty crash at Lake Louise. There was a large international field of racers from 18 countries. Snow conditions and mild temperatures resulted in a challenging and bumpy course.
In the men's competition Unterberger (bib 82) was the top BC Team finisher, moving up from 37th in the super-G to finish 14th in the combined with the 4th fastest slalom run on the day.

On Sunday the ladies took to the "Old-Timer " race run, for a long, turny super-G. BC Teamer Stefanie Fleckenstein (WMSC) scorched the 3rd fastest super-G time to lead the Canadian contingent. About half of the top seed failed to finish the technically demanding course. Teammate Mikayla Martin, fresh off of the DH race series at Lake Louise, was 10th.

In the afternoon Fleckenstein clocked the 13th fastest slalom run to finish the combined in 5th position, just ahead of teammate Martin in 6th. Fleckenstein and Martin stood 1st and 2nd on the Junior podium.

It's never easy hearing that one of your competitors hurts themselves right before you but I just stayed focused on what I needed to do and I think I accomplished exactly that. AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM MANNY OSBORNE-PARADIS – CANADIAN ALPINE SKI TEAM
My name is Manny Osborne-Paradis and I am a member of the Canadian Alpine Ski Team.
I grew up ski racing in Whistler, British Columbia, and am now living in Calgary, Alberta. Through hard work and dedication, I have been a member of the Canadian alpine ski team for 12 years. Throughout my career, I have reached the World Cup podium several times, and competed in multiple Olympic Games. My teammates and I are now headed to Europe to race in the Audi FIS Ski World Cup and aim to be competitive on the world stage, bringing home podium results for my country.
Although ski racing is an individual sport, there is a comprehensive team of specialists behind me, consisting of world-class coaches, ski technicians, physiotherapists, medical staff, and many more, that have enabled me to succeed. With the support of Alpine Canada Alpin, I continue to follow my dreams and represent Canada proudly.
I am writing today to ask for your help in ensuring that my teammates and I can continue to succeed. Our team relies upon the generosity of Canadians to donate and support our programs. In order to continue our pursuit, we must raise $400,000 over the next few months, to ensure that our athletic programs are properly funded, as we prepare for next year’s World Championships and the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea.
