17th Annual HUB International Nancy Greene Festival – Hosted by Sun Peaks Alpine Club at Sun Peaks Resort, Friday March 22nd & Saturday March 23rd, 2019
Sun Peaks Racers look forward to welcoming special guests and Olympians Ken Read and Nancy Greene to the 17th Annual Hub International NGSL Festival!
With the Sun Peaks Nancy Greene Festival just a month away volunteers have been working hard to make this year extra special for the athletes and their families. Skiers from across the province will have a chance to participate in two fun-filled days of skills events, ski racing and modified ski cross.
There are some exciting additions to this year’s Festival. New this year…Speed Skiing Canada and Sun Peaks Speed Skiing have sponsored the Speed Trap Event. For many kids this is the favourite event of the weekend, when they have an opportunity to see how fast they can go in a fun and safe environment. The speed event “Break the Speed Limit” will be run by Sun Peaks Speed Skiing Club and there will be a prize for the boy and girl that “Break the Speed Limit” this year.
Also very exciting is the announcement that Crazy Canuck Ken Read will be joining us as a special guest speaker! Ken will join Nancy Greene at the Friday apres ski party and awards presentation in the village, and will speak to the athletes, parents and coaches in what is sure to be an inspiring and uplifting talk.
Sun Peaks Racers would like to remind ski clubs to register their teams early, before the March 4th deadline. Due to the popularity of this event registration space is limited and no late entries will be accepted.

Dreadnaught Ski Racing FIS National Downhill Camp, Downhill and Super-G Races and "Lite ‘em Up on Main" Night Slalom – Kimberley, January 28 – Feb 5, 2019
FIS athletes from across Canada were joined by international competitors from USA, Japan, Australia and Austria at Kimberley Alpine Resort to take part in the 2019 Dreadnaught Ski Racing FIS National Downhill Camp consisting of 3 days of serious speed training. For many it was their first experience on one of the best downhill tracks in British Columbia. In all 34 ladies and 49 men took advantage of this amazing and popular opportunity to hone their speed skills.
When the training camp wrapped up and everyone was 'up to speed', participants switched into race mode for the FIS Dreadnaught men’s and ladies’ night slalom, super-G, and downhill races. An impressive international field of 38 ladies and 55 men showed up for the downhill races, and even more for the super-G and the fan-favourite night slalom under the lights on "Main". Huge thanks again this year to the annual sponsor, Sandor Rentals, for making the night slalom a possibility!
This 10-day speed series was a herculean task for race organizers and Mother Nature was not completely cooperative. One day was lost to a significant snow event, but a proactive ROC made a good call by stacking 2 training runs the day before, allowing all the races to be completed during the series. It was thanks to a lot of hard work by all the athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers that the whole event was completed successfully. The Technical Delegate, Darrel MacLachlan, said it was an excellent venue.

Steve Hilts, photographer extrordinaire, braved the cold temperatures to capture some spectacular images! A big thanks to Steve! Here is the link to his photos: https://www.freshshots.ca/Sports/Skiing/Alpine-FIS/Kimberley-Dreadnaught-Downhill-2019/

Athletes from 13 British Columbia Clubs met at Kimberley Alpine Resort from February 7th to 10th for round two of the U16 Teck Open Series Speed Camp and Super-G. There were 58 ladies and 59 men who participated in both the camp and the races. This was an introduction to the world of speed for many on the famous Dreadnaught Speed Track. Lots of BIG smiles all around.
Mother Nature was not cooperative and the temperatures were in the high minus teens to the low minus twenties. When the wind was added to these temperatures, it made for challenging conditions for all. The ski racing community must be a hardy lot, as there were never any complaints, everyone just ‘layered-up’. A big thank you to all those volunteers, and to Kimberley Alpine Resort who worked hard to make it all happen!
Ryan Mckenzie took some incredible action shots. Here is the link to his website https://therealmckenzie.smugmug.com/Super-G-Race-U16-2019//. Be sure to check it out!! (above right) Photo of Bruce Holliday, Chief of Race (courtesy of Ryan Mckenzie)
(above left) A photo taken inside the tent where very resourcefull volunteer coordinator Lynne Tuttle, who was running the electronic display scoreboard, thought to keep the electronics warm by covering them with a nice electric blanket! Report submitted by Donna Briggs, Race Chair

BC Alpine is proud to introduce Team BC for the 2019 Canada Winter Games
From February 15th to March 3rd, Red Deer, Alberta will welcome the nation to the 2019 Canada Winter Games. All Alpine events will take place at the Nakiska Ski Resort during the second week, from February 25th to 27th. Nakiska is the legacy mountain from the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics!
The 14 athletes (7 boys and 7 girls) filling BC’s quota, and set to represent our province at these games, were selected from the first round of BC Teck Open races (2 GS & 2 SL) held at Sun Peaks, January 10th to 13th. They will compete in four events; Super-G, GS, Slalom and Ski Cross. The Ski Cross competition is scheduled to take place at Canyon Resort near Red Deer on March 2nd.
BC Alpine and BC Adaptive Snowsports are excited work together and attend the Games as one "Team BC" that will include two of BC’s para-alpine development athletes! Visually impaired skier Logan Leach out of Vernon will be racing with his guide Caele Kassa, and they will be joined by teammate Justin Johnson, a sit-skier from the Fraser Valley. Leach and Johnson will compete in Slalom and GS on February 26th and 27th.

The Vernon Ski Club hosted a hugely successful Okanagan Zone Speed Camp at SilverStar Mountain Resort on Jan 25,26 & 27 with over 100 U12, U14 & U16 athletes. Those in attendance were from the Vernon Ski Club, Big White Ski Club, Apex Ski Club and Revelstoke Ski Club, with special mention to the Yukon for making the trek to SilverStar for the 2019 Okanagan Speed Camp! This camp was one of the only chances for kids this age to strap on their longest, fastest skis, pull on their speed suits and get into their most aerodynamic tucks! THEY WENT FAST!!!! Each athlete had the opportunity to do seven runs in the DH course between Friday and Sunday. With the amazing help from the coaches, some of these athletes improved their course times by up to 25 seconds!! The top speed reached was an incredible 111 kms/hr!

"We had a fantastic Lightning Creek Teck Race at Troll on January 26 and 27," said Michelle Klapatiuk, Race Chair and Alpine Racing Director at Lightning Creek Ski Club. "We hosted athletes from Prince George and Smithers. All together there were 40 racers competing in the two days of racing. I think people consider me a bit crazy to try and pull off 4 races in two days, but we did it! Two x 2-run GS races on Saturday, and two x 2-run SL races on Sunday. There were lots of smiling faces and a lot of good skiing to be seen on the slopes of Troll Resort."
