First-year FIS racer Jack Crawford, of the Whistler Mountain Ski Club, blazed to his second FIS win of the young season, this time a giant slalom at Lake Louise, Alberta, as part of the Keurig Cup.

After finishing fourth in Thursday's GS in a tough field lead by Alberta and B.C. provincial ski teams, Crawford posted the fastest first run time Friday and held on for the win. BCST racer Martin Grasic (Windermere Valley Ski Club) posted the fastest second-run time to finish second overall, while teammates Blake Ramsden (WMSC) and Patrick Carry (FAST) finished third and fourth respectively for another strong showing for the BC men. BCST racers Dominic Unterberger (Revelstoke), winner of yesterday’s race, and Broderick Thompson (WMSC), Thursday's third-place finisher, did not finish on Friday after "putting down full attack runs", said head coach Johnny Crichton. "With that type of skiing comes mistakes but it's how you deal with the mistakes that will make you a champion."

On the women’s side, Jocelyn McCarthy of the Alberta Ski Team took the top spot with Alexandra Burk and Mia Henry, finished in second and third. Whistler Mountain Ski Club’s Kelly Steeves put in a strong performance, finishing fourth, while Revelstoke’s Jamie Park and Whistler’s Rae Swette and BCST’s Alix Wells (Prince George) finished seventh, eighth and 10th respectively.

BCST Men learn from “world-class” field at Loveland, Colo., Nor-Am races

FLASH QUOTES – BCST Men’s team

Nick Cooper, Men’s Coach:
“The plan for this first series was to focus on the process and get prepared for the season. Of course we would have liked better results but I am happy with the way we battled through this week and improved each day. We will continue to train down here this week and prepare for NJRs at Loveland next weekend and copper Nor-Am in two weeks. I am excited to continue to ramp up and know the guys are hungry to ski like they can in a race environment.”

Patrick Carry, Fernie
“Although it may not have shown up on the results sheet, I think it was still a solid race series for me. I'm happy with the approach that I took into the races, and had some awesome sections of skiing. It has been a great experience racing at this level and seeing what it takes to make it in a field among some of the world's best.”

Broderick Thompson, Whistler
"It has been awesome to be down here in Loveland with such a stacked field, seeing the competition and knowing I am competitive is a big confidence booster. Although I had a tough series staying on my feet for two runs, I feel strong on my skis and can't wait for our next races. All of the boys have their sights set high and are in good spirits for the near future down here in Colorado.

Martin Grasic, Invermere
“Great to have the first races under my belt. I feel like I keep improving every race so I'm looking to the rest of the season.”

Brodie Seger, West Vancouver
“These races were quite challenging because of tough conditions and a stacked field, but it feels good to have the first race series under my belt. Even though it was difficult to put a clean run together, it was a great experience and it was very encouraging to be able to compare our skiing to the top athletes on the circuit.”

Dominic Untergerger, Revelstoke
“High bib numbers, adverse conditions and a stacked field made for a tough weekend of racing. Although I never managed to put down a clean run, or get a second run for that matter, I consider the races to be a success. I'm happy with my approach to each run and feel confident. I know I'm skiing solid and can be competitive in the coming races. I'm looking forward to the next couple training blocks and the later Nor-Am starts.”

Coast zone skiers show their skills at Alpine Athletic Champion U16 Challenge

The Coast Zone U16s took the challenge this past weekend in the first ever Alpine Athletic Champion U16 Challenge … and it was a huge success! Athletes from Whistler, Seymour, Cypress, Hemlock, Grouse and Mt Washington came together to test their fitness and athletic ability in some great athletic challenges!

Athletes were put through their paces in three different environmental challenges, gymnastic gym, gymnasium and field, each of the tests taxed the skier athletic abilities and fitness levels. So, are you a fit U16 skier? Maybe you can come out next year and prove it!

A huge thank-you to Jordan (WMSC) and Tamara (Grouse-Tyee) for putting this together and all the parents and coaches who volunteered to make the event run so smoothly. And how about the great prizes: wow, thanks to Skis and bikes, Uvex, Muscle Milk, POC and Dr Zipe!

B.C. HPP skiers on the trip of a lifetime in La Parva, Chile, South America

Photo from BC Alpine website: www.bcalpine.com

After 10 days on snow, and three to come, the province’s best club ski racers are enjoying a culturally-rich, physically-demanding training camp at La Parva, Chile, during the BC Alpine HPP camp.

“We have been pushing the kids hard on snow and they are really bagged,” said Derek Trussler, Big White Racers FIS coach. “This is a great group of kids, all very positive and responsive to Rob (Boyd) and myself. There has been solid improvement and progression from all of them and I think those who haven’t been here before are getting a really great cultural experience.”

Photo from BC Alpine website: www.bcalpine.comAfter a successful slalom block with plenty of volume, preceded by four days of Super-G training at the start of the camp, the group now switches to GS with the intention of completing a “perfect balance” of all around training.

The HPP group has worked alongside the Whistler Mountain Ski Club for the duration of the camp, which has helped create a positive and hands-on environment for the two groups.

“All coaches and athletes are working well together and we’ve been milking some outstanding training conditions (weather and snow),” said Rob Boyd, Athletic Director for the WMSC. “The snow is hard under a layer of med packed fresh from a few days ago. After a few runs and slips we get down to the hard old surface and the kids are able to charge and get good feedback from their skis – especially those on the new dimensions.”

“We have been emphasising homework every day and time is set aside daily for them to do it.” There is however, limited time in the day with dryland, video and ski prep so it is tough to get it all in.”

The group will conclude the camp with a day spent at a beach front village near Santiago before returning home September 30th.

LIFE LESSONS: What I Learned From Ski Racing – from cheese-wheel.com

GREAT ARTICLE from Cheese Wheel that every ski racing parent should read.

The older I become, the more I realize how truly awesome of an upbringing ski racing in Colorado was. The lessons learned tearing around on skis with my best friends at a young age are still with me. Certain qualities are bestowed upon young ski racers, and I believe these qualities help them succeed in far more than just ski racing.
