TITLE: Body Weight and Female* Athlete Triad

* Affects Males as well

Body weight and body composition impact performance in every single sport, with vast differences between more weight dependent sports (e.g. running) and less weight dependent sports (e.g. swimming).  However, many “A” type athletes take decreasing body weight to the extreme, resulting in poor health, and eventually poor performance.    In sport this is primarily termed “Female Athlete Triad”, although this is not immune to males as well.  Many times this can either initially can go unnoticed by coaches and support staff, or is ignored due to the delicate nature of body weight.  This short presentation will take a physiology/elite coach perspective at the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to ideal body composition approaches periodization, using an elite female middle-distance athlete as a case-study.

Confirmed Presenters and Panelists:

Dr Trent Stellingwerff earned an Honors BSc in human nutrition and exercise physiology at Cornell University (Ithaca, NY, USA), while being a middle-distance athlete on the NCAA Div. I varsity track and field team.  He then earned a PhD from the University of Guelph (Guelph, Canada) in the area of Exercise and Skeletal Muscle Physiology, while being an assistance coach to the Guelph varsity track and field team.  After a post-doctorate research fellowship at Maastricht University, Netherlands, focusing on human muscle recovery with nutritional interventions, Trent took a job as the senior leading scientist in Performance Nutrition for PowerBar at the Nestle Research Center (Lausanne Switzerland).  Trent currently is a Senior Physiologist at the Canadian Sport Centre – Pacific (Victoria, Canada), where he focuses on servicing his physiology and nutrition expertise to Canada’s national rowing and track and field teams, as well as leading sport innovation and research.

Hilary Stellingwerff, 2012 Olympian, semi-finalist in the 1500m 2012 Olympics, 7th in the 1500m World Indoor Championships

Our next workshop is scheduled for Thursday, January 10, 2012. Our working topic is “Developing Benchmarking/KPI for Key HP Pathway Transitions and Introduction to Sport Readiness”.
