Janyk 16th in Bormio SL

Britt Janyk's stature on the World Cup ski circuit continued to rise Sunday as she turned in one of the fastest runs of the day to record a career best slalom result in Bormio, Italy.

The Whistler racer was 16th overall, clocking the second fastest final run behind only race winner Janica Kostelic, who won her third consecutive slalom victory and fourth in six races this season.

Kostelic's winning time of 1:36.74 was more than two seconds faster than runner up Elisabeth Goergl, of Austria who clocked 1:38.82 and Swedish veteran Anja Paerson, who finished in 1:38.90.

Janyk fought through gusting winds and a worn course with start number 45 and sat 25th after the first run. She blazed through her second run in 49.86 seconds to finish with a total time of 1:39.78.

“This tells me that my slalom is fast I can be right in there,” said Janyk. “With a good start number I'm as fast as anyone out there.”

Janyk, 22, races on Salomon skis, the same brand being used by Kostelic and she's been taking some extra time in the video room watching the overall World Cup leader.

“The Salomon skis will run the same. I try to get an idea of her movement on skis and watch the line she runs,” said Janyk. “Janica's found a groove and she's going with it, but I don't think she's unbeatable.”

Women's coach Mark Sharp noted the deuces have been wild for Canadian racers, posting the second-fastest second run for two consecutive days. Allison Forsyth placed 10th in Saturday's giant slalom.

“When you have runs like Britt's today and Alli's on Saturday, you know the talent is there. Britt had a great first run just to qualify in the top-30, and she had an absolutely world-class second run,” said Sharp. “It was pure skiing.”

Forsyth, of Nanaimo, BC, failed to qualify for second run on Sunday. Emily Brydon, of Fernie, BC, raced her first slalom since the Salt Lake City Olympics and also failed to qualify. Genevi

Tough Day on Both Sides of the Border

The men's and women's BC Ski Team endured a tough day on the slopes on both sides of the border Friday as the men raced their second GS in Sunday River, ME and the women wrapped up their two days of GS at Mont Garceau, QC. Lustenberger, no stanger to the podium, had a tough go starting in 63rd crossing the finish in 1:48.35. The women's competition shifts venues and continues through the weekend at Val St. Come, QC.
